Quick Rant: Obsessed with the product, not the process
11 years ago
(First and foremost this isn't targeting anyone specifically or anything it's just some things I feel like saying. Also be aware that this will have little to NO structure either and will probably be a little whiny. Gomen)
Looking back at old art and old art pages I see a ton of mistakes and problems I made while trying to get better. Granted noticing problems are good! Recognizing you've grown past your mistakes are excellent! What isn't good is purchasing and commissioning out your artistic vision due to laziness or lack of confidence.
Now understand, I have 0 problem with commissions in general. Some people here LIVE off commission money. I want to make a good amount of money from commissions myself because I love drawing and what else is better than making money from something you love? But what I really hate seeing is young artist or young people in the community kinda pick up drawing and just dash it away once they get a ref done by a good artist or a couple pieces for people to recognize your character by. Like you didn't even give it long enough! It's hard! It takes a really long ass time to get to that level! Hell even I haven't reached even an eighth of my full potential yet! (Or at least I hope I haven't .____.) But overall you'll never get better if you don't keep at it and keep trying!
Here are some good resources I found that I myself will be utilizing this summer to improve:

*Will add other books when uploaded to drive*
*Will look for animal reference/anatomy books as well to add to the list*
-Back to rantish thing-
This whole mentality seems to be a result of obsession with the product and no care for the process when it comes to drawing. Like the desire to be flashy is more important than learning to do for yourself. Kinda like the whole analogy of "Give a man a fish and you feed him for day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". It just seems like we have a larger amount of fish takers compared to fisherman and this isn't due to them being unable to LEARN but rather by choice. Hell I know drawing isn't for EVERYONE but if you even have the willingness to try it try HARD!
Ok overall all I'm trying to say is please please PLEASE if you want to learn how to draw, color, whatever just keep at it and DON'T QUIT! That kind of attitude just follows you in pretty much everything in life even outside of art.
Rantish thing done
