First time doing commissions. Help me please? ^^:
Hello there, people of FurAffinity. :D
I am a new guy to this community, and also a nooby when it comes to commissions... and I was wondering if I could ask help from you guys with several stuff?
I've had my commission slots open for months now... and... I just don't get any customers. XD I legitimately don't know what to do... I'm so new to this. First and foremost, I would like to get to know the community more, both in a social aspect and in whatever aspect I need to know in terms of commissions. Secondly is for me to fill up a portfolio so that I can attract more people... but I need a few, initial people to commission me first for that to happen. XD
So... yeah... help a guy out here? I'm at a loss, not to mention I only know a few people here in FA, so my network is limited. I don't even know what to specifically ask you other than to guide and point me on where I should go and what should I do.
I'd just also like to remind you people that I'm... a conservative, SFW person. I don't really draw yiff. ^^; I know that doing yiff and porn will suddenly skyrocket my opportunities, but that's just not me. I'm not the kind of person to do that... stuff... at all. Also, even though I'm straight, I have nothing against drawing anything gay related, so long as, again, it's still relatively SFW. I admit that it's still uncomfortable to me in some small degree but it generally doesn't bother me at all, and you'll see no negativity from me when I communicate with the massive gay population here on FA. Trust me guys, I'm a crazy, derpy, and squishy guy! :D :D :D
So yeah... halp me plz? ^^;

Payment system: How do you take payment for the commisions; (safe set is 1/2 at start to hold their place. 1/2 after it's finished)
Paypal (or some other digital money site),
Money Order (you'd have to give your mailing adress for this)
Trade/barter (art work for art work. this take negotiation between the 2 parties)
then there are REQUESTS. where you don't physicaly get paid but rather lots of thank yous for the free art.
and of course there's always the "suggestion bin". (you get bored, you just pick something out of the bin of what people suggested and make it)
These 2 are good for expirimentation of new styles and art types.
Now on to what I've seen for examples: (prices for each are really up to you)
Stage 2 sketch: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/13302964/
(A stage one would just be Kora and Jake without any color byond the pencil)
Full color Bust aka heat shot: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/12544004/
(My suggestion would to pratice diffrent views and expressions)
Full color Portrait: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/12543915/
Now onto expected turn over time and length of commsion line.
How long did it take to make each one?
If it takes you a long time to make each one have short commsion batches so you don't get over loaded.
(My suggest limit your batches to 3 at a time untill you can figure out your turnover time.)
This should atleast help you in makeing a "Commission Journal" page.
Then there is a better chance of commissions because people will have an idea for where to start.
And you should thank SilverWingCid for bringing this to others attrention.
And I'll make sure to thank him. :D
My normal route for purtchases:
1. look for current commission prices (in this order)
a. Look at the Commission info tab
b. Look through the Journals for a "Commission" info page
c. Ask directly via Private Message (notes).
2. Figure out what you want to get and have the payment prepared.
3. Look to see if there is a commission slot open.
a. Look for a journal entry stating what the commission status que is and rate of completion. (sometimes posted on main page)
b. If unsure ask if a slot is available and what the current turn over rate is. It may be diffrent than usual due to home issues.
*note: if they give you an extimated time say like 2 months, I give them an extra 6 byond before I start hounding them about it. but thats me*
4. Make a request for a commission slot. if available otherwise wait till one is open.
a. Ask for the slot and tell them what you would like. Be specific! use examples!
b. Set up the payment form. (ex. paypal, money order etc.) as well as how they handle payment (ex. all up front, 1/2 now, rest after etc)
ba. Make agreed payment contract.
5. Wait for your turn on commision list
a. Pay close attention to any early parts incase of need for corrections.
6. enjoy the art.
That's the normal way that I buy my commissions.
But with that said, you want one? ^^;
Another big way to get recognized/gather attention which in turn brings commissioners, is to post regularly and as much as possible! I'm not saying spam or post somethng you scribbled on a napkin in two seconds, but anything that you took time into, even rough sketches or things you might not think are great, should be posted! For things you might not be very proud of or are too rough/underdeveloped, I suggest putting them in scraps. With more art posted, you'll get more people
TAGS! Be sure to come up with as many as you can find that are relevant! Key ones here include species, gender, art style, emotions in it, what kind it is (sketch, commission, etc) and pretty much any relevant stuff. For pairing things, putting what kind helps too (i.e. two males kissing, put 'gay' 'homosexual' etc). A great resource to discovering new tags is e621, so try browsing there! Also, try browsing the really popular artists and pieces of art/literature; you can find good tags there too.
A BIG help is to always put 'commissions open' in your tags! A lot of people looking for new artists or someone to commission search that! It'll get you noticed by a big portion of the community whom checks regularly (and with all the people demanding art of their multi-penised multi-gendered rainbow haired centaur abominations, that's a lot!). Also, another thing people love is 'YCH' pieces, or known as 'your character here' where an artist has a base body outline and offers to draw in a character for whomever wants it, similar to a commission. It's like buying a used couch in the sense that you'll still get a couch you want, just with an established base already set. Many people check these out due to the relative ease/cheapness of them and are quick to buy/bid on them; that's another thing: it's a lot like an auction where you'll have a base price you want (say ten dollars) and the people that want the piece reply to it offering a higher amount. Usually people have an autobuy price as well, which helps entice others to buy it.
The big thing of getting noticed on FA is to have your portfolio grow more and more; once the ball gets rolling and people are favoriting/commenting along with your art growing more common, you'll gather followers much easier. It's very much like the 'get the ball rolling' term!
Those are the base things to getting noticed that I can think of, I'll comment again if any more come to mind. Feel free to ask me questions! Also, if you want, I can post up a journal about your art/commissions being open if you'd like! I'm always happy to help a fellow commission-seeker ^^
As for sketches, I rarely upload them because either 1.) I sketch while I'm bored in class and while the prof is discussing something that is not really relevant to my course, and therefore a lot of my sketches (70%) are in a notebook. I don't have a scanner... so yeah. ^^; And 2.) most of the sketches I do only depict things that interest me, and although I am open to the fact that people might also be interested in them, I just don't make the effort since I know it's bleak. XD But I'll very definitely take your advise into consideration. I'll just have to find doodles that aren't like what you said about doodle on napkins in 2 minutes. XD
And I never really new that tags were that important to getting exposed, but now that I think of it, it all makes sense. Tags are used for search results and that in turn brings more viewers and that increases the chance of one of them being someone looking for people doing commissions. Thanks for that. :D The only problem I'm seeing here is that I typically do not do yiff, at all, so I hope that there are enough people out there willing to consider getting a normal commission rather than a porn one. ^^; I haven't tried the YCH one yet, and I'm not really sure how that'll turn out for me because from what I know, YCH are mostly for porn pics, but I'll think of a way to use that. :P Not just now though, I'd rather have a bigger follower list so that I'll be guaranteed to have potential buyers.
Again, thank you so much for the advice. :D I'll take you up on your offer for me to ask you any more questions should the need arise. :D
