a glimpse into depression
So I just read an artical about a girl who got a chip implanted into her hand. There was a few references back to a game she released, Depression Quest, it is meant to be a story game that helps demonstrate what the thought patterns are like, and help people understand the condition a bit better.
I decided I would check it out, see if it rings true with myself and a few other people I know who have suffered from depression. The format is very basic and is just a "choose your own adventure". You read the story and there are parts where you can choose which action to take. BUT it gives you a few options:
the norm for a clear headed person
The norm for a person who is still trying
and the one for someone who is about to give up on trying.
( some questions have more then one option for those, but they are the underlining thought process aliened with the options.)
The social norm option/s are always crossed out, they are merely there to give you an idea on what people without depression might react with.
For myself, as a sufferer and someone who is still trying to keep my head up, I have been going with the options I chose in real life.
I am only a little in, (about 15 pages, 6 options) and already I feel this is a fantastic expression of what its like being in that dark place. The way its written, you can empathize incredibly well, and it truly dose question your perception on what depression is.
For those currently suffering from mental illness, it is a highly likely hood of resurfacing those raw emotions, so please keep that in mind when looking at this.
For those who want to understand what it feels like to be struggling with clinical depression, and get a better understanding of what people with it go through,Please consider even just playing a little bit of this game. It has fantastic potential and I feel would be a great learning tool for family and friends of people who are suffering from depression.
For those wishing to play the game: http://www.depressionquest.com/
Its free to play, but they do ask you try to donate.

It's terribly accurate (to me at least)...the ending I got to is pretty much the biggest fear in my life...
See it as a learning experience, to help give you a broader veiw on the options in life. :)
