Iguana Taqueria (http://www.yelp.com/biz/iguanas-taqueria-san-jose) is near the con, though not walking, and most excellent and cheap. If you like Korean, there is a huge Korean population in Santa Clara, which is just a hop away from the bit of San Jose the con is in, though again, driving only.

San Mateo and the area around is full of awesome Asian places - for amazing dumplings, the Shanghai Dumpling Shop in Millbrae is downright amazing (http://www.yelp.com/biz/shanghai-dumpling-shop-millbrae) and The Ramen Club in Burlingame does great bento lunches and, obviously, ramen (http://www.yelp.com/biz/ramen-club-burlingame-2). If you want to keep in San Mateo itself, the "down town" (1st-6th street-ish) has some great places, especially the Vietnamese/Pho places - not sure I've ever eaten in a bad one. Also, given the large Hispanic population, the Mexican places are pretty good too. Japanese food in the area is excellent but 'spensive.

Erm, last but not least, there's a great Japanese-focus (but they do have GI Joe and other similar stuff) in San Francisco, if you make it up there - Heroes Club (http://www.yelp.com/biz/heroes-club-art-of-toys-san-francisco) - which happens to be right across the street from an excellent (but ugly) dim sum place called Happy Garden (http://www.yelp.com/biz/happy-garden-san-francisco).

Only place I knew of in San Fran proper was Things From Another World in the Metreon. So to add shops to my list of places to see, awesome, will definitely be lookin for more in the area

Haha, no worries, 'tis my stomping ground so I know what's around. I know there's at least one or two more toy shops worth recommending, but the names are escaping me now, argh.

I haven't been to TFAW recently, but a lot of what was in the Metreon is... not as exciting as they want you to believe. They just didn't get the flood of folks coming through that they thought they would, and the businesses suffered. You may want to call TFAW to make sure they're still there before you make the trip! I will vouch for Heroes, though - they're small but carry a lot of fun stuff at good prices.

I live up in Millbrae just north of San Mateo Gideon and know lots of awesome places to eat up in this neck of the woods and down there. Nola's comes immeditaely to mind if ya like Cajun.

Mr. S Store is a Leather/Rubber Fetish store with yummy clothes, masks and other taste goodness :3. Can be expensive but its sometimes worth it :3. I bought rubber chaps and a rubber hood from them.
