Who needs villains when you can have heroes. I say overly done concept, they always fail.

well if you look at the original sleeping beauty male was evil becasue she was evil, she embraced just like Rattagan form the great mouse dective. becasue for them being evil was fun and we had fun watching them be evil. It can be done right with the right writers. but I agree some villains need more motivation.

Ota, how would you feel about a villain who honestly thinks they're right? Like, they're doing the right thing and that the ends justify the means.

Depends what media you look at. If you're consuming swill-grade media, you're going to have unjustifiable villains popping up.

Good villains take... time. To get one you just... love to hate, you need... A cause, that confuses the heros. Are they right? Is this man/wpman right? You need charisma. You need cunning. And at the end, you need them to fail. Or better, just for once... succeed.

My favourite villains are the ones that are comical.

There's always been these issues. Villains generally had a loose reason to why they're "evil" or doing "bad things" since the morality of comics and movies had to be black and white.

Why they do it? Cause of money, the lust for power. Simple reasons. It's not since recently (last few decades). We actually got to know the villains, and what makes them tick, other than me bad, you good let's fight.

Some might call it lazy writing, others would call it a return to the old days.

My favorite antagonists are sympathetic villains with tragic backstories - who could have become heros if a single event had gone the other way.

Take, for example, the humanitarian who takes over the world because humanity can't be trusted to govern themselves or resist their self-destructive tendencies.

Or the fellow who makes sure all vixens are kept safely bound at all times for their own protection. He's just looking out for them.

I agree though, a villain that one can relate to is all the more interesting. There's a place for one dimensional baddies, but they can't carry a story. Done right, they can easily out-shine the hero(es).

Well, not EXACTLY like that, but pretty close, it was a hero protecting mankind from the demons until he found out the horrors human beings are capable of and decided they are unworthy to be saved and must be instead clensed from this world.

In the TV show "Once Upon A Time", there is an immense share of "villains" that aren't so much villains, rather than tragic characters who went wrong for several different reasons.
Namely, Regina, the "Evil Queen" from Snow-White who has perfectly valid ( yet slightly exaggerated ) reasons to do what she does.
An even more extreme is Rumpelstiltskin, aka "Mr Gold", who's even more tragic than her, and, would rather be a hero ( and sometimes acts like one ) if it wasn't for a very tragic loss for him that he tries to make up for all the time.

I really recommend you to check these out, if you think writers today have gone too simple ^.^

Villains who think what they are doing is right, and even hav a just cause are pretty damn interesting, same with those with tragic backstories, my favorite example of the latter being mister freeze from Batman, I mean, his wife is literally dying from parkinsons and he put her in stasis while relentlessly researching it, that's even where most of his funds from crimes go too.
