Hard times getting better
Around last November, I found myself in an untenable situation. I was unable to find part-time work, and the GI Bill was not providing enough money for me to continue living on my own. This was coupled with a growing frustration with the college I was attending and the fact that their 'Game Art and Design' program had only a single introductory class to the 'design' part of game design that I actually want to do with everything else being geared towards making art assets.
While valuable skills, and I should draw more to stay in practice, they are ultimately not what I want to be doing. I am more interested in the programming and scripting side than modeling and animation, yet it is world building, story and character design, and design and balance of mechanics and systems that I truly love doing.
In the end, I withdrew from the Art Institute at the end of that quarter. Starting in January, I began looking for full-time work. Finally, as of one month ago now, I have found a job...and the pay will be pretty good once I get past the temp period (So late August...). I should be moving into my new place either this weekend or next, and will have much more time in the coming months for my writing and what little art I do myself.

That's not to say that you should avoid others, though, to the contrary, I find getting around other artists/writers and asking for feedback is a great method for self-improvement. There's a #writing room up on Bigfurs.com's chat that I go to frequently and would recommend it if you're looking for feedback/ideas/techniques.
