Hmm, I guess try to give hugs and always have someone with you so that they can help you with your fursuit, also don't be afraid if someone wants to take a picture with you, like me :3
The way I see it, talking, any sound at all or not talking depends on the character/fursona. So, say the character you're performing perfers to keep it silent in order to bring out the purpose(s) of that character; they most likely won't talk yet do other actions of expression. And then you have those who do talk in suit like: Coopertom, Buddy Husky, Calamity Cougar etc. It's hard imagine them NOT talking because it's what they've made the character known for. Finally, there are the Squeakers like: Telephone, Ari, and Vin who are known for squeaking. Again, it's hard to imagine them NOT squeaking because they've made themselves known for it.
Really, it all comes down to preference, where you begin and how you want the character to be known. I don't think talking in suit "ruins the magic" at all. If you want to talk, then talk! If you want to squeak, get a squeaker and go for it! If you want to be silent then shut up xD
As for how my performance goes, I prefer not to talk in suit. I prefer to stay silent but still be animated and expressive in different ways on the outside :) It's how I want to portray my fursona; and if I were to talk or squeak, sure it may be surprising to people at first. But over time, people get used to it if you keep it up.
