If you have a PC, I think the consensus is Pidgin is a touch better/cleaner then Adium. On MAC's Pidgin is only open source and was way too confusing for me to figure out how get installed :(

Yes, actively working at being more social (even just IMing) is an enormous step towards being friendlier :)

I'm serious, man. You made the resolution, now install the freaking IM program and have it running AT ALL TIMES. Use pidgin for PCs or Adium for MACs. They are brilliant and combine ALL of the chat programs.

Plus, a lesson to you: I live in LA and one of my friends I hadn't seen in awhile popped up in my IM program. I was like "Hey! Where you at?" and he's all like "London! Come and visit I'll hook you up with cheap tickets!" then I'm like "OMG IMing is the best thing in the world!"
There's a good chance I would never have had that opportunity to fulfill one of my greatest dreams if I had not installed an IM program (...and actively kept up with my friends).

That's the real beast of it there. I have Adium on my machine, but it doesn't do anything but stare at me from the dock, that cursed little duck sitting there, mocking me, daring me to click on him so he can put me in touch with the world.

And plus, how can not send an invite after that lesson? London's a cool town! Always wish that I had spent more time there, so if IMing gives even the faintest hint of travel abroad, I'm all over that.
