I'd been half interested in reading the book, but apparently the BDSM community is divided on the series' authenticity. I don't want to support a movie that's a bad reflection of the fetish, no matter how hot it is.

Haven't read the books and will not see the movies. This is ranked, to me, in the same classification as Twilight. Namely, A big, steaming pile of crap that needs to be burned completely off the face of the earth, have those ashes collected, put into a rocket, and then launched into the sun to make sure it is completely gone.
