TMNT review
Well, this is a movie I wanted to see from the perspective of somebody who has never known about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of the past. I used to love TMNT when I was a kid. And to a certain degree still loved them up to this day. From interviews and leaked photos and video snippits, I knew this was nothing like what we used to know and love from the past. A different take and new story for the TMNT franchise. So, last nite I went to the beautiful IMAX theater we have in town, snuggled into the leather recliner seat and hoped that it wouldnt be ruined. Now, Ive seen more than my fair share of Micheal Bay movies and know that you can more or less toss what you know out the window in regards to cannon content.
So, I decided to view this from a fresh perspective. As just a movie. Not a TMNT rehash.
And I must admit. It did not disappoint. I give it a resounding, "Meh.."
It was nothing special. It felt Very rushed. The CGI on the turtles was very well done. That, I have to admit. You could practically smell them it was so real. The lips on a turtle thing.... Ehh. I will be honest, they all looked like Shrek with out his little horn ears. It was distracting at first, but you do get over it. Splinter. Fuck.. His design was disturbing. Ugly. I get that it was their version of an anthropomorphized rat. But his just looked sickly. Not happy with that at all.
The plot was better than I thought. I have to wonder if they had a few re-writes as the plot was leaked some time ago. The acting was about the usual for a Bay movie. Bland. They focus on the energy of the main characters. The turtles. Much like in Transformers where the acting was far better with the 50 foot tall robots, than the real life actors. And much like Transformers, it's a 'leave logic at home' sort of movie. Dont think too hard about anything going on. Its pointless.
All and all, it was nothing special. Its forgettable. Rent and return. Dont bother seeing it in theaters.

Ok, so that link is a joke, but I did think that the hyper-realistic turtles look a bit too much like the cave trolls from LotR. I saw the trailer and got annoyed by how the voices sounded coming out of trolls. It was a huge nose dive into uncanny valley.
I may see it in two months on Netflix, or a plane trip, or garage sale for $0.25. *nod nod*
