Had a great time at Denver's Chubbys! Not really...
11 years ago
This is more so a warning to tourists, foodies and local residents of Denver who are unaware. Please for your own safety do not go to The Original Chubbys at 1231 W 38th Ave. Especially if you are white, law enforcement or dress nicely.
So this is what happened, starting with the back story. I was picking my parents up from DIA after coming from my brothers wedding (I came home earlier in the week). Luckily I was making a 2+ hour plus drive and didn't feel like wearing anything besides casual clothes. Unfortunately my parents still had dressier clothes on from the wedding. My dad especially had a terrible Polo on, it had the homeland security insignia on it very clearly. Well I pick them up and we're wondering what to do, 11 at night and a bit hungry. We look up what's open and not feeling like fast food we decide on Chubbys. The other location we've been to and had zero trouble. This one however is in an already sketch neighborhood. Should have turned around at that point. Decided to just go for it. I stay in my truck to keep an eye on our luggage while my dad and mom went into order. About 10 minutes in I see a couple guys from the suv that just parked in front of me get out and walk in. They come back out not more than 5 minutes later. One stays in the suv and the other grabs something. I thought,"No big deal, maybe they're doing the same as we are". Very wrong. Guy turns his lights on and stares at me. Wasn't until when my parents came out that I fully understood what was going on. Apparently the guy that grabbed something, was getting his gun. He had seen my dad when he first walked in, instantly looked him dead on and yelled "Scrap check! Scrap check! ", then walked out and came back to stand right next to my dad. My dad obviously knows that this guy was pointing out to everyone there that he is a cop. at this point my dad is getting ready for what's next. My dad sees this thug reach for his gun in his back pocket/stuffed down his pants, immediately raises his elbow in preparation to sock this thug in the face and reaches for his own gun. The thug sees this and backs down, thankfully. He leaves shortly after, gets in the suv and leaves with the other guy. All the time I'm sitting there being stared at with high beams in my eyes. So not worth the, now realizing, below average food. Very unsafe neighborhood.

That is really awful, I'm so glad you're Dad knew how to handle the situation. I used to live on that side of town but I never hung out on 38th avenue other than passing through. So glad you guys are safe. ; ^ ;

Thanks, I'm glad he knew what to do too. Not sure what would have happened had he not. Thought that I could give that place the benefit of the doubt. Thanks again for the concern.
