What inspired creating frogoblims and Filtered Fuzz in general?

I first created Maggot back in July of 2007. Though i had many, many characters at the time, but very few animal characters. I wanted to create something that had never quite been done before. when I created her, I had lots of different animals in mind for inspiration, including chameleons, bats, cats, frogs, and monkeys. Jared was created not long after that and soon I started experimenting with a four panel-style comic strip format, which was published in my college's student newspaper back in the fall of 2007. I quickly decided that wasn't working for me, and in the winter/spring of 2008, I started working on the first 15 pages as part of a school project. Around that same time, I took a class on World Mythology that really helped inspire some of the writing of my comic as well. It wasn't until July of 2008 that I first started updating Filtered Fuzz online. That's kind of a boring story, I know, but the point is, it took quite a bit of initial planning, buffer-preparing, and soul searching before the comic as you see today went live.

As for my favorite thing to draw... Hmm, that's difficult. I really do enjoy drawing nature backgrounds and anything with mindless texture, but it also makes me happy to draw character facial expressions. I suppose it really does depend on how I'm feeling at the time.

I came here to ask what they asked so thank you...and thank you for such a wonderful comic. I need to comment on it more though.

Do you wanna build a snowman?

I would if it weren't 90 degrees outside. Where's Elsa when you need her? XD

I'd just be happy if someone brought the rain never mind the snow. We're getting light showers here but it's not enough. Least we don't have to worry about fires as much this year.

Even the thought of wild fires is awful, as is everything else that droughts have to offer. I hope you get rain soon.

What were some of your favorite cartoons and characters growing up?
Were there any that specifically inspired your style and original characters?

I always loved Disney cartoons, from the old Silly Symphonies, to the movies, to the Disney Afternoon cartoons like Gummi Bears and Ducktales. And sometimes I even wonder how much something as obscure as The Wuzzles, which I only saw a few episodes of probably influenced me to some degree with all of the hybrid animals. Also, I always loved the Muppets and the works of Jim Henson. I really grew up on cartoons. If I were to list them all and how each individual cartoon impacted my style, I'd be here for hours.

I only saw Twice Upon A Time and Rock and Rule once, maybe twice each when I was really young, and they both had huge impact on who & what I am, and my artistic sense of style.

It's interesting how things can leave an impact years later. I guess everything and everyone has an impact, especially on kids.

It probably has been asked before but what are your main inspirations ? The ones that made you say "yeah, I'm gonna draw stuff. And I'm gonna draw it like that".

Also, do you work on any big project other than filtered fuzz ? Did you do anything pro-related ? Your artstyle is definetly publish-worthy so I wondered.

When I was in middle and high school, my style was far more anime influenced. In my later teen years, I recall making a very conscious effort to change that and take on a more toony style. I don't really have one direct source of inspiration. It's all just an amalgam of stuff I enjoy.

Sometimes I'm most inspired by things that are really outside of my style, such as the works of Andrew Loomis. Also, when I'm stuck in a writer's/artist's block, I like to turn to a children's book called The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. It's a children's picture book by Chris Van Allsburg, which I didn't discover until my second year of college. It's a book full of random, non-sequitur illustrations accompanied with an excerpt (usually a single quote or sentence) from an imaginary book. Even though it's nothing like my style, it's usually enough to get my imagination going when I'm feeling out of sorts.

I appreciate that you think my art is publish-worthy. Right now I don't have any other projects I'm working on as far as comics or anything. I do get to draw for my job, but it's more of a local thing, designing signs and t-shirts and stuff for local businesses, schools, and events. It's not something I'll ever be famous for, but it's a living and there's usually something different every day.

I heard about that book. Gotta check out Amazon/eBay since I want to check it out.

And yeah, realistic styles can be more inspiring than people think. I used to get influenced by stuff from Harold Foster, Eddie Campbell or Francis Bergèse.

When did you started to draw digitaly?

Hmmm... That's a tough one. When I was in elementary school (sometime between the 3rd and 5th grade) I discovered MSPaint and drew with that at school when I got the chance. Sometime during middle school I discovered oekaki and spent much of my middle and high school years drawing with a mouse. Eventually, I switched back to drawing more traditional art and using Photoshop to color, which is how most of my work is done now.

I remember i used to draw with my mouse a lot when i was 12, because of a fandom. :P
And my drawing looked like it been drawn by someone that have 8 years old kid.
I joined DA when i was 14 because i was proud of my drawing during that time.
