I have to say I really like the idea of patreon on paper, however in practice this idea falls really really far from what I can do. I love watching a ton of different artists. I always have at least 20 to 50 new submissions on this site per day to look at. I love that! Imagine now if I took the artists I love the most and had to pay them to see their stuff. I'd easily be spending more money than I make each month if I subscribed to $5 to $10 per artist. That just isn't financially feasable and I am sure I am not the only one in this situation/ opinion.
I really do understand that a lot of you that I watch make your living off of your art, however you should not be entitled to a subscription fee just to look at art that other people paid you to make. You don't get paid twice, or at least you shouldn't. Charge me $80 for a commission and I expect the world to be able to see it for free once its done. Heck, that's why my page exists. I upload stuff I had made for me. If patreon becomes the new standard I would no longer be allowed to upload any art made for me by someone else because they all would "lose money" that way.
I wish all the artists on FA the best, but I really hope this patreon thing passes and falls into obscurity someday soon. I don't like the idea of paying a sub fee just to see people's art.

red-dog is definitely using it as a half way paywall, where she still posted stuff, but it has either been censored in someway if it was to be a nude pin-up.
Take a look at the artists' pages I will have linked below, all of them have said they are going to post as normal, but for those that help, they get extra bonuses like High res files, and other things that were not posted regularly. Because we wouldn't get the high resolution file for a commissioned work or even regular work sometimes, thus why some artists offer and sell high resolution packs for pretty cheap. whether it is monthly or yearly. But there are other exclusive things people get as being backers.
I agree Patreon is not intended to be used like a pay site or even semi pay site (e.g. sexyfur, hardblush). It was intended to help fund long time projects such as comics, web series, or even to help ease the burden some artists face while taking on commissions to make ends meat, and there are plenty of artists that do that, you just have to know which ones they are.

No there are plenty of people that hate it when artists use Patreon as a semi pay wall type ordeal. Though there are plenty of people that support it as well because they believe an artist should get paid for everything they do including personal ideas that weren't commissioned, especially if it is nude pinups. Not to the point they won't share their art, but if you want pieces to be uncensored then you pay like a dollar a month or something.
Someone compared Patreon to a tip jar, but then I am basically said, then shouldn't they post their nude stuff too? And I got jumped for that. But this is on red-dog 's page. To a point I do understand that artist should get paid, because art takes time and time is money, but I agree Patreon was/is not suppose to become a pay sure but it is very easy to make it such.
The problem with doing commissions for a living is that we really need to pay our living expenses, and for that to be done we need to do those commissions. Commissions take up so much time that artists often have to almost never do personal work or "that cool idea for a painting" or a comic or whatever, because the more time we spend on personal art the less money we make.
So that's why I personally love patreon and think it should be used for. As a way that artists can still pump out the personal art (which is usually their best work, being that it comes from their personal inspirations and enjoyment) while still being able to live :)
I am lucky to be living in a house with 2 other peoples in a particularly cheap place, so my BARE MINIMUM living expenses per month are about $800 all up. So I am managing to get by alright on my art right now in commissions alone, but it does really suck having noooo time for ANYTHING personal right now that aren't just sketches since commissions are my only income. I have to rely on saving up enough money to afford taking a week off work to have time for personal art.
I'm glad you agree on that side of it :) I agree with your journal, I couldn't honestly use it as just a paywall and definitely don't expect people to pay money just to see my art!
