I know most people have dogs, cats, fish, birds, some even a reptile of some sort. I knew a girl in high school that had rats, even going as far as walking around with them in her hair(also told me that she wanted to get her butt cheeks pierced and run a chain between them to see if it would slice her shit in half... So she might not count as 'normal' in this.) I have seen all sorts of small mammals as pets even skunks(de-musked). Most are kept at home even if seeing a ferret on a leash is cute...
But to day at work I seen a woman chase down her pet rooster. She was just enjoying a drive with him and had to get fuel and he decided to hop out and take a walk around the station.

One of the worst jobs at the Ag Center was trimming Charlotte's trotters. Using a dremel grinder, trotters smell like burnt hair...
my parents are rehabilitating a racoon at the moment, and myself i am saving up to put a down payment on a house so i can build an outdoor enclosure fit for a fox.
I am an active member of the exotics community, so i know a decent amount of people who own non-traditional pets, i have even had the opportunity to hold a tiger cub. Ohio was a great state for exotics until the whole Zanesville incident.
My Uncle had a raccoon when he was young, never trust any animal with thumbs(or dexterous paws that can fake it =P) Also a duck till the neighbors cooked it...
In Holland just outside of Toledo there was a petting zoo(barn...) that had tigers, bears, and other animals. They didn't close down because of the Zanesville incident but because their sign was a picture of Rajah from Disney's Aladdin.

She's rather cute a and my fiancé has fallen in live with her too.
Never was able to have any lizards/amphibians mom was terrified of them, she only let me have turtles/tortoises because she thought she could out run them. And now I don't have any room to take proper care of them if I did get one...
