There's tons of sites you can use to practice figure drawing! Make sure you pay attention to the forms and muscles and shapes! Build up the body with lots of different shapes. Then you can at least make it look pretty legit if you don't 100% know what every little bit of the musculature is. Focus more on the shapes and forms that make up a larger object and not the lines, if that makes sense?

And I usually use 2000x2000 and stick to somewhere around that :o

I don't know any literature or anything, I'm also pretty much self taught. What I did do though, was collecting tutorials and stuff from other artists that I deemed useful to me. It might help, it might not, that's up to you to decide. Also references are always helpful, when it comes to posing and anatomy.
My standard canvas size is at least 2000x2000 pixels, the bigger it is, the easier it is to work on details and I found that to be a good size for it. I usually start sketching on that and mostly the sketches end up being smaller than the canvas, so I scale them up to fill out most of the canvas again, before doing the linework.
