In terms of the fandom itself, it hasn't been around incredibly long, relatively speaking of course. However, anthromorphic (the blending of man and animals in humanoid form) art goes way back to feudal Japan, further back into Egyptian artwork and mythology, and even beyond then into prehistory.

Therefore, anthromorphic art has been around for literally millennia. In terms of the original fursuits, who can say? We see cultures around the world dress up as spirits and animals during festivals and special ceremonies. It is uncertain how far this behavior has gone on, but whether or not it is a fursuit depends on your definition of the term, as fursuits are commonly associated with recreation rather than religious or cultural vestments.

Ah this is very true! So eventually the fandom grew into its own community after a while? Either way I'm glad it's a real thing and that I am a part of it! ^^

The community as we know it didn't really occur until the 21st century. Artists from Egypt, Japan, etc during these past eras probably did not draw these figures out of admiration, as their imagery was instead heavily ingrained in folklore and mythology. I doubt it was the admiration of anthromorphic art that drew them to draw these creatures, as is the case with furry artists today.

Oh well thats still cool! :) So maybe the fandom started with both movies and plays and it just grew into its own thing? :3 Still very cool!

Well it was his part to play the dog I don't think he made the suit himself. :P
