Created species/closed species?

So, I've really been thinking about creating my own species, but I'm worried about the possible backlash that people tend to get when making closed species etc - like, ohh that looks like so and so's species, you stole it! Or similar fan peeps trying to stick up for their favourite artists despite that artist not wanting them to cause trouble...
So I was wondering, does anyone think I still should?
I'm a super imaginative person and have a tonne of interesting back story to go with things like this xD just don't wanna get battered by peeps if my species looks like a tiny bit like something else. (There's only so many features a thing can have, after all?)
On another note, can anyone show me some closed species? I only know of a few, so would love to see some more. I'm interested in seeing them so that I don't infringe on anyone's designs but also I'm looking to adopt someone newwwww!

And the only made up species that I know of would be the Sergal.
I quite like Sergals too! Never drawn one yet though :3
If I do end up with a species of my own, it will probably be closed (simply because I'm proud of things that I create and the ideas behind them, so I'd like to keep a list of the 'family' so to speak) but I would make regular adoptables, and if people wished to create their own I would happily work with them to create the design :3
I'd have no problem with them having art done by others of the character etc and I wouldn't intend to charge a great deal for them either :3 just to know people liked them would be plenty!
