That's kinda why I don't talk to many people... I can't tell if it's flirting or not either since, for a long time back in the day, I didn't have much kindness shown to me (and the most of the 'kindness' I got was people wanting to get into my pants :l ) but yeah, I know where you are coming from. It's actually not that weird.
It's only weird when you can tell they are flirting and you'd think they'd know to back off when they can see it's uncomfortable. Lol
