Now, first off, I have no idea what the heck Furcadia is. From what I've gathered, it's a 3D social massive multiplayer game. I've seen several people submit art they've done for ports, which I can only assume is used as an avatar image in some way, right? I DUNNO.
My question is, they all seem to be submitted in the same basic format: To one side is the original but with a big ol' hideous stamp or signature all over it, and to another side are one or two re-colours of the original, possibly smaller but usually without any obstruction. This is done why; to prevent theft? It's pretty depressing if people steal them so heavily that artists have to do that to public submissions of them, wow.

FA+

Also, Furcadia is a wasteland. Never play it.
I don't know much about em as I tend to stay away from those kinds of things. But I do like that first like you put up, very sneaky and manic looking >=]
And second life is basically you life away from real life, you make a character, it can be whatever you want, and you can literally make whatever you want in it, and do whatever you want: fly, eat, have sex of any kind, dress in whatever, drive whatever and so on and so on. It'd pretty cool when you get your head around it, but it can get very addicting...some people have even started proper paying businesses on it xD
This of course has nothing to do with your post but I was genuinely surprised it's still going on strongly enough for people to submit art to it or something.
although users can customize their own little areas, with custom graphics and programming, in the regular public areas everyone still looks practically the same. like six different species, and one sprite for each gender. various recolorings, with maybe dragon wings. so you can see why everyone wants something to look like a unique individual in a crowd, which can only be done by uploading a portrait picture.
oh yeah and the game is FREE so a lot of cheapskate kids take it seriously and don't want to pay for anything, so that kind of art theft has been a big issue for over 10 years.
BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT'S EXACTLY LIKE SECOND LIFE
i love doing ports because it sharpens my pixel skills up a little and i don't just do cheap halftones on oekaki.
yet its only fun if your friends are with you, otherwise i just sit around until it says USER is online
it pisses me off though that you have to pay like 10$ to get a damn SPACE to upload the port into, and then wait for approval from the staff. :/ so usually i just whore out premade crap and hope they buy it so i can get what i need for discounts on the forums..
Everything at Furcadia is expensive to customize stuff. :|
