AFC con report: Panels and pawesomeness
As many of you did not know, I had the great pleasure of attending Arizona Fur Con thanks to
who fed me and provided a nice place to sleep.
Friday offered a slow start as it was Halloween. I arrived a little late after a fairly sleepless night due to a roommate bringing over drunk and rather rambunctious friends over the night before. The con included a little trick or treat time in which I dressed as a starving artist. It wasn't exactly a "costume" but it was the best I could manage with the resources I had. Other than that Friday was a seemingly dead night.
Saturday rolled around and this is where the fun began. Early in the day I had a panel planned. If you do not remember, I had been working on a senior thesis involving the Furry fandom. My research has focused on investigating anthropomorphism in ancient artwork, and more importantly finding any significant links between art and culture. What I found was that depending on how a an anthropomorphic or furry looking figure is portrayed, determined how a culture treats its environment, and how it interacts with other cultures around it. My expectations were rather low. While I wanted a big turnout, I thought that only about four people might be interested in the research. I was shown quite the opposite as roughly 20 people, including two of the guests of honor showed up. After presenting the vast bulk of my research we had roughly 35 minutes of really interesting and in depth discussion, question answer and feedback time.
I must say, the support from the group was invigorating. I will most definitely be continuing this research and looking to other cons to present my research with financial support from my college. In order to bring this to other people and conventions for the entire fandom to see. Thank you to everyone who came and gave me additional resources to look up.
The day went on with other activities, ending with the comedy shows of Who's Lion is it anyways?, Uncle Kage, and 2 the Ranting Griffon.
Sunday was that sad wrap up day. Despite the dance competition, gaming, and closing ceremonies the final day of a con is always bittersweet inevitably ending with a long drive home.
Over all I met a lot of fantastic people. I didn't spend as much time with some friends as I would have liked but over all it was still an awesome con.
The report will be uploaded here after I send it through a little more editing in order to ensure that it is coherent and better suited to the fandom.
