Explenation of Non-refundable 30% deposit

Because of past instances of people feeling entitled to the 30% nonrefundable deposit i wanted to offer an explanation of why it even exists in the first place.

oThis is a standard and nearly universal practice among fursuit makers to protect the work put into a commission from the moment the deposit is sent.
oThis deposit holds your slot. Meaning it holds us both to an agreed upon result. To me making your suit , which means doing all the 'prep' work involved. but to you also making sure payment will not only be complete but in the agreed upon time frame.
oThe deposit covers the cost of supplies. Supplies are not just fur but, other fabrics,clips, pins, glues, needles, thread, foam and not just 1 type, multiply types and thickness of foam are used. Along with plastic, paints, sealants, dyes and in some cases electronics, wires, battery packs, LEDS. Etc.
oThe deposit covers per-commission work and organization. Vast amounts of hours go into emails, checking fur and fabric colors, ordering swatches, ordering supplies and separating them out for each commission. Prepping DTD and converting patterns to the needed size. Etc.
oThe deposit means other work is turned away. When you secure your slot i am turning away other potential work. When cancellation or failure to complete payment happens i have turned away other potential income.

When a commission is cancelled or payment is failed to be completed the money that was counted on coming in is lost. Even though the deposit is kept, time, the slot and income is still lost. All i can do is push forward. The deposit does help the hit but still everything else is lost and i'm left to try and make up the refunded income in the future because that current slot is gone.
I hope this helps others understand this practice. It seems unfair to the outside. It seems like we are keeping money for nothing. But we are not. We do not come out ahead in this situation even with the deposit. Please make sure you are both serious and financially stable for a commission. No one wins in the situation of a cancelled commission from choice or failure of complete payment. I do my best to understand that life happens but only so much bending can be done but i do try to bend when i can.
