Though it is possible that they are either without internet or dealing with some real life issues (being the holidays and all).

I have had people send me money for a commission and then totally forget and I never hear from them again. Odd.

My main concern is that it doesn't end in a "cancelled" commission. It isn't that I can't afford to pay back the money, it's the lost time having to re-auction the piece, or offer it to the second highest bidder in the hopes they're still available.

I have a rule that char refs should be provided same time with bids :)
So I can start as soon as auction closes

I make it a consistent habit to send the money and right afterwards sent a note on whatever website I purchased it on, to provide deets and refs while saying in the end that money has been sent. Artists seem to appreciate having all of you, the commissioner's, things done right as you win the YCH/order the artwork.
trust me guys, just get it all done at once! Makes the whole process much smoother for you and simpler for the artist. After all... they have art to do! Why make it that TINY bit more difficult for them by putting your part of the prepping off? All it does is set the artist back, and I think every artist will agree when I say that a competent, efficient commissioner is a very good and easy to work with commissioner.

A guy did this to me once, paid for a commission then didn't ever tell me what they wanted despite me sending notes. Eventually it was just handed to me as a donation. Later on the same guy won a YCH but didn't pay and got angry that I was "hassling" them for the money so they eventually went on to say I stole their money from 7 months ago.

Even though things like this seem harmless it's actually more dangerous to allow people to not give you information, they could later on say you're robbing them lmao

I know this comes like laaaate ^_^; But i would never ever recomend links in paypal, at least links that lead to nsfw images. I rather would put like um..note or email character information/link/s to artist here or email artist gives or someting o.o

Yeah thats why sayd note or email :3 I have put on auctions that if person dont pay/deliver needet info in 48 hours, the winner will be the second bidder. So entering in bidding, they _should_know the rules. Or if it seems i never get info i refund , just to avoid being called thief/non working the image/s. That can also be mentioned i commission/auction infos, that if you pay yet dont give me information in certain time you will be refundet and again second bidder gets image...Or sadly you have to see the what i say tiny, issue to re-auction the image. Artist like Fisk should never have problem that there is nto people who are not interested get piece from him XD

Yeah, seriously. You win a Naylor auction and don't follow-up? I'd say maybe something bad happened that's left them indisposed, but I can't imagine not sending the details at the same time as the payment. If they're waiting on a reference or another commission to use as one to finish, you'd thin they'd have mentioned that to him.

I'd go with a 30 day rule. If there's no info provided by 2359 (11:59pm) on the last day, you get to keep the money and are able to re-open the YCH.

There are way too many legal ramifications to keeping the money without providing anything in return. It would be better to do what I've seen many artists do. Past the time limit, just refund and move on. No second chances.

They could be waiting for another artist to finish a reference sheet / update ref. Have you tried contacting them?

You could always create a type of expiration policy that after a set length of time or number of contact attempts they forfeit a percentage of their price. Like a missed appointment fee at the dentist.

Damn odd though. If I had the cash to have a commission done I wouldn't be wasting any time in getting the ball rolling.

It's very weird indeed.... Whenever I give money for art, I'm eager for it and rush the infos to the artist. I especially appreciate when I'm requested to send the infos BEFORE the payment (so that the artist can give me an exact price, based on what I'm asking)... I guess that auctions are different. Oh well... one reason more to prefer commissions over auctions. :P

Think the most relevant point in cases like these is communication.

No one likes being left in the dark, especially if you're an organised person who has deadlines and committments to meet. How long does it take to send a note saying 'sorry, I can't commit to whatever right now because of XXX reason, but will do so on YYY date'? Its common courtesy.

Unfortunately, the internets I guess.

I completly understand.I cant say that that has happened to me other than the once that commission me to score a r film, and I work on stuff and they decide to trash the film.
