That depends on if you are creating the body that you intend to be using or not. But regardless it's pretty simple you can either take a pre-existing skin and then save it locally to your computer to modify it before uploading it to SL or try to create your own. If you create your own I would recommend temporary uploads because character mapping can sometimes be off which is a pain in the ass.

If you are using a pre-existing skin you can modify it and temporary upload until you get it perfect. Once it's perfect you can pay 10L to get a permanent upload. The temporary will only show to you and last only 24 hours before being deleted but are free.

Actually applying it to the object is tricky because me personally I don't have experience with mesh.

Can you link me the body you intend to use for applying a texture? or are we just applying this to a default avatar body?

What I mean is you can buy parts that are mesh which means they are a completely solid object. and reduce the lag of everyone else because they only have to load one body.
