RE: drawing tablets
Hey everyone, i was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on buying drawing tablets. You see, i just bought an Wacom Intuos4 tablet. Unfortunately, i don't think i put much thought into it too well, because i found out that this was a type of tablet that needed the use of a computer to work, and you cannot draw on the actual screen of the tablet. yeah, stupid me )=
I know now that there are two types: the desktop one (the intuos 4) and the ones where you can directly draw on it. I just wanted a type of drawing thing where I can just "get away" from the computer which I already use for many things. What i was hoping for in a tablet would act like the nintendo DS with that drawing program on it. Unfortunately the tablet that i am thinking of buying, the Wacom Cintiq is extremely expensive compare the the Intuos4. Does anyone have any ideas on finding a better tablet and possibly a cheaper one, or do you think i should maybe do the easy way, and simply get a DS and the drawing training program on it. What sort of tablets do you all use, are the desktop tablets the only ones to get?
There are some choices that i was thinking of.
1. buying a Intuos Cintiq from ebay, hopefully it won't be that much expensive
2. buy a gameboy 3DS with Art academy (I am still an amateur and I haven't truly mastered drawing)
3. Or maybe i should just buy Intuos4 first, and then later on save up for one that you can use without a computer (e.g. cintiq)

and yeah, Stay away from Cintiq unless you have literally $1000s to throw away on a tablet that if anything happens to it, you have to pay even more to fix it. Wacom inflates their prices because at the time, they were the only tablet making company out there. Now there are many more popping up and thier prices are outrageous. Avoid buying from Wacom if at all possible. Their products are good, but known for being defective and the price to relpace the parts is WAY higher than the price to buy the parts from a third party vender...just to find uot the TABLET itself is what's breaking the cord due to horrible design (it bends the connector, making it not work). Plus their customer service is terrible, they make you pay to help you with an issue. Even for non-screened tablets, you can find relatively inexpensive ones by googling around.
Also, I noticed when youre commenting, if you click "reply to this post" on my post, for example, Ill be notified that you replied, that way if you have a question, that original poster can get back to you, and reply to your post, and so on.
If you have any other questions or need advice, don't hesitate to shoot me a note, I'm happy to help. I was in your boat once, and its hard to find an approachable artist that can help with questions you may have!! :)
I'd recommend the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.1 (or whatever the latest is). That's a Smart tablet that's designed for artists and only costs about $300 to buy. I used it a little and the drawing is a bit laggy, but I'm sure with practice, you'll get used to it. Plus if you can draw on the 3DS very well, then this tablet will be a much better purchase for all your art needs as it comes with a free mobile version of photoshop.
Hopefully it's not too late to share that advice. There are many drawing tablets out there that don't require a computer, but as technology gets better, more pop up in the market, and I think it'd be really useful to find a good digital artists tablet that's high quality but lets you draw independently myself actually.
