Well, I was thinking along more mundane lines then that.

Right now I'm leaning towards, the trying to overwrite one piece of DNA, with another piece of DNA, and the college just happens to have complete sequences of large DNA laying around. Though of course, this experiment was never intended to be tested on an actual living person.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is modern medicine, particularly in finding a way to avoid many of the up-and-coming superbugs. Since many human diseases don't affect cats, and visa versa, that might be a good line of investigation. Well, in sci-fi anyway!

Hmm, that might work, I'll have to keep that one in mind for the future.
