How do you handle your characters?

While I browse on the site, I see that there are quite a few people that have their own personal characters with thought out personalities and stories (Hopefully), but then I also see those characters used in very specific fetish art, and I've always been curious for the people that do this...
When you have your personal character, and you place them in some weight gain/transformation/other fetish story. To the owner of the character, are these things normal for the character themselves, and would experience in their own story? Or are the works featuring them "Non-Canon" for the characters involved. Or are there some characters that are used only for these, and on the flip side, characters that you never have involved in things you do with others?
Like I said, I've always wondered on how other people see this.

There are exceptions to this, as some stories have a lasting effect if I decide they explain part of the character's past, and I choose to keep it. These are more for side characters though, not the one I consider to be myself. He's just pretty much indulging in the now most of the time.
In art and stories my characters tend to inhabit a world where whatever happens to them is not something out of the realm of possibility, though it may be a departure from the norm for them. My main character, who is basically me anyway, tends to be gluttonous if given the opportunity, but tries to exercise some restraint for practical reasons. Situations, or other characters, may compromise this restraint... something he may regret after the fact but he just gets caught up in indulging until then. But again, each such instance is basically a new story, mostly.
