I never thought this would happen. Warner Bros. is releasing Road Rovers on DVD. Then again, it's a bare-bones release, and Warner Bros has been selling DVDs of cartoons with, shall we say, smaller fan bases than this one. (Dumb and Dumber, anyone?) Still, I do hear that the picture and sound quality are better than the current screenshots and clips of the show floating around the internet.
I will be honest here: Road Rovers was when I discovered my fascination for animal to anthro transformations. In fact, it was how I found the furry fandom. You see, back in 2001, I had been trying to find the right search terms, but I was getting nowhere. So I went to the Road Rovers' IMDb page, and one of the keywords used for the show was "anthropomorphic animal". I put the term into Google, and the rest is history.
I didn't watch Road Rovers during its original KidsWB run but rather when Cartoon Network was airing reruns. Looking back, it seems like was Tom Ruegger's take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a franchise I didn't get into until the 2003 series. In fact, out of all the cartoons that tried to capitalize on the original TMNT's success, Road Rovers was one of the few (Extreme Dinosaurs, Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa) that took the "animals turned into anthropomorphic beings" aspect. Other shows just had the heroes start out as humans or be born that way.
As for my feelings on Road Rovers now, I haven't seen it in a while, but something tells me it wouldn't hold up to scrutiny. Also, I have mixed feelings on the show's fandom. While I can admire their dedication, most of them seem to forget that this was made by the same guy who created Animaniacs and Freakazoid. Sure, the series wasn't a total laugh fest, but it did have jokes like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxVasZV4Pbo In other words, I think they take it just a tiny bit too seriously.
All the same, this is an exciting development. Who knows? Maybe I will revisit it for old time's sake.
P.S. One thing I find amusing is that Animaniacs once made a joke about Sheena Easton and a few years later, she was cast as the main villain's second-in-command in this show.
