I love base auctions. I feel like you can make a decent amount of money off of them without being super dedicated like you would have to a fully finished fursuit head.
depending on how well the head is made I've seen head bases go for up to $250.
my suggestion is to make something unique! Give it awesome shapes and sculpture.
you can also get more money for a headbase by lining it with lycra, installing eyes and finishing the mouth. :3
