Why does it have to be so scary?

There is finally a ABDL group activity in my area that I know about before it happens. Part of me really really wants to go meet others like me and to be able to participate in age play beyond my little personal safety space. But it's just so darn scary! So have any of you been to real life group ABDL EVENTS?? How'd you get the courage to go to your first one? I hear they can be great fun.
