Patreon - Maybe not for me, but what about...
Thanks for the feedback on my previous journal. I think it's clear that Patreon is not going to be a good fit for my needs. Someone pointed out that even the benefit of extra income won't magically give me more free time, and I'd be better suited finding other ways to grow as an artist.
That's not to say I won't be considering some of your other suggestions, though! Many expressed an interest in tutorials, something I've been pondering doing for a while now. FA journals would be a good place to get votes for what to settle on when I do need help making decisions, and that way everyone gets a chance to chime in even if they don't have cash to cast their vote. Plus, when the tutorials are finished, I can offer them up on sites like dailymotion linked from FA, and share supplementary files like PSDs or other material via Mega.co.nz.
So what sort of art would provide an incentive to me? I've been hard at work on a comic project (30-40 pages) that's adult in nature, and would love to try out a unique business model, but I'm faced with one of a few ways of going about it. Please give your view on which of these sounds better, or a different idea entirely.
1) Complete the comic, then post 1 to 2 pages per week, linking to a digital distribution channel (like Pulley or e-junkie) to get all of the high resolution pages immediately for a reasonable amount, like $15, or $20 at most. Eventually all pages would be up on my gallery for viewing in a readable standard resolution.
2) Same as above, but allow sales totals to determine how quickly pages are released to the public, meaning the comic could be posted in its entirety sooner (or later) then the aforementioned schedule.
3) Split the arc into a few parts (15-20 pages), so that complete packs could be put out more frequently for cheaper price, like $7 or $10, and follow either of the above variants. (3a and 3b, respectively)

With someone like Zaush, I don't think option 2 would fail. It'd make him more money too. As a side bonus, it couldn't be pirated because no one gets it's before anyone else.
the third would be interesting but i prefer 2 as i like to read whole stories at once. i will sit down with a book and be in it for hours on end. i usually finish in one or two days. i am the same with comics. but that's just me. i like to read all at once then re read slower.
(No, I can't speak for Zaush on what those experiences were. But given the stories artists tell about arsehole commissioners and people who don't pay, I think we can guess!)

@ Zaush the second one is the best
I say go for it, it's purely devoted to the production to the comic. Compared to other artists who make a patreon solely devoted to... making art?
Technically you don't have to offer anything to the contributors, after all, the goal is the comic.
you might also consider offbeatr, it's a sort of adult kickstarter,
http://offbeatr.com/project/the-kin.....le-27569392601
But I think Forgewielder did something like you're proposing with 2. Seemed to work too, so lot of options.
It's a very reasonable compromise!
I say 1 or two works best. I knowif I have the money Ill be buying a copy. I always download the highest resolution of your pics so I would want a high resolution comic. Well actually that depends on the subject matter actually. I wouldn't be so inclined to buy a M/M comic. But that's a whole different issue. Just be up front about the sexes involved and all will work out.
Side note: This comic wouldn't be based off of this:http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12009483/ would it? Cause it would be perfect!
I think it's good to avoid the whole "Patreon exclusive" sort of thing since it's not really a pay site, ya know. :3
With whatever you decide, good luck!
Good luck!
You can essentially achieve the same outcome with what you're considering via Mega, although if you are only receiving support after completing all pages, it may be less motivating then continuous demand?
- You get money
- Paying people get to see the comic first and in higher res
- People unable to pay still get to enjoy your art, which is the basic glue of the Fandom, even if it's a bit later, which is okay.
The others could be good, but I would say they have a higher chance of failure or not to be so good. My little input ^^
:)
have you ever considered making a timelapsed video of how you paint? I think youd have to so some SFW stuff if you upload to youtube, but those are suprisingly helpful and fun to watch for me, and it wouldnt take too much extra time
When you paint do you put a layer over the sketch to make it completely lineless? I mean I'm just assuming, I can't really tell from how fast the video is... Watching painting a little slower, to see how someone shadows and highlights to create a really good lineless paintings are so helpful for me, because if you dont shade well the features on the characters you're drawing kinda blend terribly.
I am self taught, so I'm sorry if my vocab is terrible, just trying to make as much sense as possible, lol.
anyway, I do appreciate that you take time to show us how you do stuff!
I personally find seeing a page released each week quite enjoyable, keeps it entertaining and interest piqued.
Like $10-$20 or something.
Maybe post a page per week for free, but also have an option to buy the full comic before you post it. If that makes sense
Just an idea
I have all your comics saved to my phone for viewing pleasure x3 I even have your kineta dakimakura.
I love your work. Hope someday I can commission you even.
There are definitely much more "overpriced" things that are sold off in the fandom in comparison - know that people are willing to pay for something they feel is good quality coming from a popular artist. I've seen a simple 3 page comic YCH auction go into full fursuit prices, to people paying hundreds over normal commission's costs to be seen drawn with X or Y character. Or selling original (traditional) works in the thousands where the work is standard letter size. It is very surprising to me that a lot of furs in this community are willing to pay anything if the artist is good and well known. I suppose it isn't all that unlike "whales" (top spenders) in F2P mobile games, though. I've heard of rich guys who have nothing better to spend their money on but Clash of Clans, and then blowing easily 5 figures on it. If I had to choose, I'd much rather be a whale in the furry community than the F2P mobile game community lol
(2)
But I also like the idea of "chapters" such as option 3. In a way, I think it will make more money if you price it accordingly. If you have 3 chapters, 10$ each, you would be making $30 total. Vs the option 1 or 2, where you charge $20 for the full storyline...
Just a thought
But I also suppose it depends on how often you will be coming out with each chapter, too?
I'm curious to know where you take this!!
You can make a pay per post policy on Patreon - one of the creators I'm following is doing just that.
Also, there will always be people who will want to "steal" and those who will want to pay. I am in both of those categories, depending on the availability of money to pay.
I do also pay for some people producing and shota/toddler/underage con - that I hate, personally, but I pay because censoring fiction is despicable - which is what furaffinity, deviantart and patreon has done - if those people disappear it's tantamount to the disappearance of the canary in the mine.
Just my 2 cents.
