Raw food for cats?
10 years ago
Do you have a cat that eats raw cat food?
If so, where do you get your cat food?
My cat has symptoms of IBS, and the vet said he may have a mild case of it
he has accidents without even realizing it, and he goes so much whats going in isnt enough and im really worried
and i've done some extensive research that shows that raw cat food often helps quite a bit with cats with IBS.
preferably where you get it online if you do, or if you even make your own lemme know.
My mom used to make food for our dog who had digestive problems so I'm sure she can do it for a cat. ; v ;
I'm still looking myself, but most of what I've found doesn't deliver here and my small ass town doesnt have any big pet stores. >:
So even if you have any ideas please let me know im pretty damn desperate....
thank you;;

I read some reviews and it looks pretty good for loose stools!
I'll get a small bag tomorrow and see how he does c:
thank you ; v ;
Poor kitties and their lil tummies >:
Just as a fair bit of warning, it isn't exactly cheap. But it's definitely worth it.
Just curious, what brand of food were you buying for him? Right now people are avoiding Purina brand. Specifically it was their Beneful dog food that was under suspicion of causing illnesses in dogs but it's better to be safe with that sort of thing so anything Purina should be avoided for the time being. (That's more of a side note though and something to keep in mind.)

you guys always have great ideas and help me a lot!!
Well when I first got him he was a wee lil kitten so I was feeding him meow mix for kittens, not knowing he had diarrhea
when I found out he had diarrhea i was told it was common for shelter kittens so I didnt worry TOO much but i still made a vet appointment
and they told me it could be worms and we gave him meds for that but the diarrhea was still there
So I thought maybe i should get him some different foods, I took him off wet food first and then gave him hard adult food, Friskees.
And then we made another appointment when the diarrhea got worse and got medicated wet food, which he's eating now and the friskees.
> w < but it hasnt really changed if anything its the same or worse >:
Switching to dry food can usually help, well, dry stuff up. It's good to alternate between wet and dry since the wet actually helps to prevent UTI's. But in this case if the medicated food isn't helping and he's getting worse then definitely call the vet and let them know. And for the record, don't be afraid to switch vets if you feel like the one you're at now isn't pulling up proper results. Sometimes getting other opinions from other offices is a good thing. But right now just let them know it looks like it's getting worse.
Sorry for sending you all these walls. I grew up fostering cats and dogs for my state's Humane Society branch with my mom. Sick animals is kinda something I'm used to .w.
im not used to adopting > ^ <
Yes, he doesnt have worms, luckily.
I havent seen any > ^ <
And he was born at the shelter, all of his brothers and sisters got adopted and his mother was very healthy.
He still plays and stuff.
Yeah, he's eating dry and the medicated wet food now c:
I read that iams is great for helping bowel AND UTI's so thats defintily worth a try!
Oh I plan on getting other opinions soon, I just need my money to get to my bank ; ;
We are on a budget but my mom is being very supportive and said whatever he needs she'll help me get ;;; so thats great.
Yes, I'm trying to be very very careful with the foods he's eating, most definitly > ^ <
thank you<3
But good luck with everything anyway! I know it can be hard when money is tight. I'd have so much more money right now if I didn't decide a cat and two ferrets were an absolute necessity in my life .w.
I hope I can get his vaccinations soon as well > ^ < I just didnt want to put too much pressure on him and make him feel worse.
AWH lil cuties c:
I bet they have an amazing home with you, you're so knowledgeable and everything :D
As I said, it's been my life. Been fostering with my mom since I was five and we were given the "unadoptables." Treating sick and training the untrained is just what I was raised to do c:
I used to feed it to my dog, but they have a cat version too!

Nature's Variety also sells raw diets as well, and you may be able to get one of the big pet store chains to deliver it to you, or you might be able to buy directly from their website (I'm not sure).
I would steer clear of any really big name brand cat foods (Purina, Science Diet, Iams, etc.); most of those are complete garbage.
However, your vet should theoretically have some good recommendations also, and it may be wiser to move to a pure diet trial than suddenly switching to a raw diet.(Which, to be fair are almost universally garbage). Your cat may just have an allergy to a normal protein source, such as chicken, or beef, so a novel diet isn't bad, but you can't ever, ever, ever, go and feed something other than that diet or else it defeats the purpose of a novel diet.
Just keep in mind at the end of the day, cats need very high protein (40% or higher), taurine, and arachadonic acid. High moisture is also a massive plus, so supplementing with wet food is one of the best things you can do.
They get into trouble later in life otherwise!
IBS is usually just a simple food allergy to something in the food you are feeding and doing an omition diet can help figure out what it is.
One of my previous cats had an allergy to fish and he had the runs bad when he would eat it so we just made sure to not give him any food with fish in it.
