I'm okay with the inclusion of ads. Letting IMVU plug an ad seems more than fair, all things considered. Considering how many people are running adblock, I'd say that makes it even less to ask.
However, the primary activity on this site is viewing images. The addition of the sidebar makes that more difficult, taking up screen real estate that used to be occupied solely by images. :/ As such, the images are now smaller, and viewing them in full res—and viewing them in genral, really—is now more difficult.
I feel like we'd all be pretty okay with this by comparison if they just didn't put the ad in a place that, while still highly visible, didn't detract or obstruct from what the site it being used for... Which is sharing and viewing content. :c

And that's my phone long-ways, which isn't preferable for browsing...so that screenshot is quite forgiving.
But yeah, the sidebar in and of itself really is inferior to just... having that information below the picture.

I believe you, actually, and your screenshot confirms it. I want to believe that all the problem is because the efforts are going to the new skin instead of the old one. I wont judge if that's good or bad; the new UI has several bugs when I run it from my tablet. But it surprises me being one of the few that doesnt have problems with the sidebar.
I only think, what will happen with people when they change to the new UI and ditch the old one? Massive migrations to Weasyl again?
To bad it doesn't exist on the phones x.x
I wouldn't mind if it wasn't there as well, though. The only thing I really care about is blocking first-party ads as well as third-party ones, and I don't want to block FA sponsored ads.
I've never really used the full view button. Only view/open image when I have to. But I prefer the pictures to simply get the screen real estate they deserve, especially on my phone screen. x.=.x
