bitter melon

I found this (fruit? vegetable?) called bitter melon at the store. I figured, I like bitter things like grapefruit juice, maybe I will like this.
First off, I have no idea why it's called a melon. It's seed, skin, stem, and "meat" structure matches things like chilies and peppers. Also it looks nothing at all like a melon, more like a shrived cucumber. Why on earth call it a melon??
So I took a bite of the thing expecting something bitter, but not overly strong. One little bite SO BITTER NOPE NOT EATING THIS *spits it out and throws the rest of it away*

I was checking these out at a local grocer last week and a random stranger offered me advice about how to prepare it. She said to cook it with lemon or lime juice to counteract the bitterness, and some spices. I bought one and forgot about it in the fridge, discovered it again when it was starting to get a bit moldy. I cracked it open and ate some of it, found it bland and bitter. Despite its name, it's meant to be cooked before being eaten... Yeah, everything about it is un-melon-like.
