Do we live in a rape culture ?

As furry enthusiasts we are exposed to many different types of people,
and varying forms of self expression. We meet furs from all walks of life
that are a mixture of ages and social-economic backgrounds. Some of us
are charimatic out going individuals, but the vast majority seem to be those
of us that are introverts and to some degree socially awkward.
With this social awkwardness that is a burden to us we attempt to shed it
when in mass we attend our conventions. Its great fun to meet these new
people, share art, ideas, and stories. We talk about our characters' similarities
and a lot of their built in personality types that usually involve a subtle (or more
overt) sexual nature. Which is fine, we love fantasy, we love to role-play and
we're all mature adults, RIGHT??? Well there is a darkerside to the awkwardness.
What i am talking about is what happens when a room full of people who
have been drinking and partying, and a lot of times as happens between
furries there is a miscommunication. Again tying back into the sexual nature
of furries and that God-awful awkwardness there happens to be a lot of
misunderstandings that arise. it often makes the casual hook ups difficult
frustrating or outright impossible. But also there are also actions that are
interpreted incorrectly causing a huuuuuge misunderstanding.
Well now with GamerGate gaining momentum and the anti-feminist/anti-SJW videos
popping up on youtube with a quarter million views each, the momentum has
finally shifted from being the silenced to being the outspoken, and again it is
time for me to speak to defend my reputation.
i've written about the false rape allegations made against me from "anonymous"
sources in the past, but now there is data that shows i may have a chance to
not only salvage my reputation, but to confront my accusers and tell them to put up
or shut up. again there are no official charges pressed against me, as it is impossible
for someone who doesnt exist to goto the police and fill out a report. but none the less
i issue the challenge to Alex or one of his buddies, or whomever else has beef with me
to take it to the next level. of course this will never happen because if i'm found innocent
i will then have the opporitunity to confront my accusers in a court of law and sue for
defamation of character. A civil suit i will surely win, as its been proven and i have many online documents that collaborate the narative of this conspiracy to sabotage my
reputation.
Really all i want is an apology and for these people who are not my friends,
and whom i do not know to quit spreading lies about me...
but back to the main topic, sorry for ranting... Do we live in a rape culture ?
i would say, no, the timid nature of furries doesnt create an environment ideal
for rape. and really i only think its the bottom layer of humanity that is capable
of such a thing. MOST furries are genuinely nice people! and so with these false
accusations going around and people in recent years just now being held accountable
i feel like these people that play victom should have to suffer real consequences,
and one of those should be to attend a meeting to hear the accounts of ACTUAL rape
victoms.
Rape should not be taken lightly, as it ruins lives, both Real victoms and the falsely
accused.
i especially feel connected to this topic and its a Fucking shame, because i've
been adversely affected, i've been cussed out by total strangers at conventions,
i've overheard from friends who have witnessed people "warning others" about me
being a rapist, this blatant mischaracterization has to stop!
if i were guilty i would shut up and let it go, i was bullied in highschool ( we all were )
and i refuse to let some cool kid furry clique bully me out of the fandom i love.
i love all of you guys, and fuck the haters...

thanks!

drunken dubachery is all good and fun when it is all adults and
we can responisbly act and behave ourselves.
yeah i'm guilty of something while being drunk, luckily i've apologized
and gained forgiveness. and when you're drunk you're luvable/huggable so
i dont honestly see any badside, but maybe because you're so tall you may
intimidate people who dont know you.
as for things that are rape:
saying goodbye
giving car rides
taking pictures of fursuits
interrupting a conversation
so watch out for those too!
frankly became a vague term; i almost feel like it should be broken down into
categories... kinda like cancer is a catch all for the sub types of cancer...
which to be clear studies show the most common form of rape is
with drunkenness followed by drugs. and when you get in to that area
its very fair for you to be considered a suspect when you were the one serving
the drinks, but i still dont believe it should be guilty until proven innocent.
And yeah, you're right. It should definitely be a case based on evidence though, and not just one testimony. And honestly I think when people do have sex it should be with a clear head and not while they're strung out on alcohol or drungs. Its safer that way and you know for sure that consent is given
i talk about it because i believe its a disscussion to be had,
yeah there is rape and that is terrible and should be punished.
i am in no way a rape apologist or minimizing the very real impact
it has on lives.
but i feel in a community we have an obligation to also take rape
seriously and not go around tossing false accusations, we are trivializing
rape and hurting rape victoms when we create false accounts. We are
throwing out false warnings and making our own environment seem more dangerous
when we toss people under the bus. i feel like more people should be outraged by
false accusations going on in the fandom, and it is so rampant its even hard
to distingiush rumor from credible truth.
its so ugly in ourfandom i feel people who do these things should be held accountable
and walk in the shoes of the accused, i wish Dae, Alex, Spectrum, Ferona, Tisket all knew
what it felt like to be cussed out by random strangers over bullshit that was spread out them
more specifically the worst of allegations and lies... its not cute, its not a fucking joke.
its just a sad highschool mentality this fandom has devolved to.
The US dominant culture is: White, Male, Upper Class, Educated, Business Class, Christian, HeteroSexual.
SubCultures or the Mediated Cultures include differing of ethnic, race, levels of education, the working class, non-chistians and homosexuals.
Furries are Sub cultures but don't find the support of furries as a culture to fit into a rape culture as it isn't what the entire culture is composed of. Neither is the Dominant culture a "rape Culture" as it isn't in the ideas, values or beliefs that builds the entire culture. Is this a sub culture then? Perhaps but small in deed.
would lead down a road of a very scarey alternate reality.
Rape culture as expressed in socially aware/advocate groups is pointing to a
system that supports [rape] and supresses the adknowledgement of rape, kinda like
'see no evil, hear no evil'...
A fair comparison would be the racist systems that have existed until recently
and the fragments of those leftover parts that continue to exist, this promotes a
variation of 'institutionalized racism'...
Proponets of the existance of a Rape culture will often cite vague statistics,
that lump any degree of sexual assualt, domestic violence against women, altogether
to artificially inflate the numbers of how much rape is going on... whats even more
disingenuous about is that they often factor in occurences that are immeasurable ie
'unreported rapes' just like a measurement for 'false reports/false acqusations' cannot
be accurately measured, unreoported/unaccounted for rapes cannot be measured.
they also use arguments that 'boys should be taught not to rape' and women
should no longer have to exercise caution for their own safety, saying that this
is an instrument & proof of a rape culture.
so far from the fantasy of rape culture existing there is the reality that society
views rape as a terrible crime, so much so that 2nd to murder it carries the most
amount of weight. and it should, all convictions should lead to imprisonment and
appropriate justice. another reality that disproves the myth of rape culture is a
very public shaming that goes against the reputation of a person being accused,
in reality they should be granted anonymity until found guilty, however
' in order to protect and warn future rape victoms ' they must have their information
put out there... i don't entirely agree with this, unless evidence shows this person is
violent or capable of murder, etc... ( i'll continue this post )
Another thing that is pointed out is 'slut shaming' as being a part of a rape culture,
i do not agree with slut shaming at all, its usually limited to the ex-boyfriends talking shit
and beyond that the largest perpatraitors are women themselves...
this is a very real thing that happens and is a part of the reminants of what could
be considered a rape culture, but again this is a social viewpoint not an institutionalized
one, we would need to modify how society views things and thinks, again this extreme
goes down the road of thought police. the ironic thing is if we were to move beyond
this more people would believe women when they come forward, not that is an issue
(see rollingstone).
whcih goes to the next leg 'belief' of rape allegations are cited as
a reason for unreported rapes, i agree with this. i don't think that there is
an unwillingness to believe, but there are people who are victoms that doubt
people will believe them ... this is the barrier that needs to be overcome
women need to be encouraged to come forward, and to file police reports.
its also worth noting that proponets of rape culture will say that no one believes rape
victoms and cite statistics that are Daunting. this would silence and scare rape victoms into
silence, its as if they are trying to convince people there is a problem that doesn't exist.
so is there a 'rape culture' i would say no, there are no institutions that support rape,
aside from the military which deserves thorough scrutiny and investigation ( one of the persons
in charge of rape allegations was infact himself a rapist )... there are only those
instituions that will shoulder the burden of the investigation to the police which they
should rightly do, and willfully cooperate and not only hand over, but forthright volunteer
evidence such as security videos etc...
i want to be extremely CLEAR when i say Rape is a crime and rapists should be given
a fair trial, and serve the appropriate punishment for commiting that crime.
i just don't feel like we should live in fear in order to get this done, lets put away
the torches and the rope.
Can this account for a few people? Perhaps. In order to be a culture we have to openly value rape as not only extremely malicious but also never acknowledge it. This only constitutes as a belief and it is a paradox. How can you not acknowledge it yet think of something as wrong?
The reason many would not come forward is fear essentially that the person who was raped would be shamed. Of course this isn't true. But our general Belief
We also don't fear believability because one of the largest contributors to persuasion is Pathos which is the emotional appeal of any argument. Logos being logical and Ethos being source credibility.
Our attitudes towards rape is aggressive and hostile. We quickly side with the one claiming the victim and quickly shun the one being accused with out a second though and rapists are revered as more severe criminals than that of a murderer. McMahon, Sarah, PhDView Profile. in an article to the Journal of American College Health wrote about Rape Myths and beliefs which they engaged in measuring the attitudes, beliefs and values of college students around many campuses.
It is to be said that we are anything but a culture that doesn't accept rapes existence or even shuns the victim or silences them. We tend to speak out about it loudly and with out reason of credibility instantaneously side with the victim while out casting the accused.
Though many would constitute our culture as a rape culture because of the many other complications, such as inner thoughts which lead to not speaking out sooner these reasons are reasons of guilt, connections with the rapist or personal denial. Though this isn't an attitude, belief or value as much as the event after being traumatized.
We are far from a rape culture as a dominent one and if it does exist it is an extreme marginalized culture that numbers are far and few between.
