Personally I find it best to first decide what character I'd like a commission of, and then, what sort of thing I'd like them to be doing. From there I can usually sort out artists whose style I like that both fit that character and the mood/feel of the piece I'd prefer. ^^' It's not much, but it's all I've got, lol. I mean, I'd go to completely different people if I want a happy toony commission of my fursona, or if I want a dark and intense piece of one of my more serious characters.

haaa i know your pain dude. I have to limit myself to one, maybe two commissions a month and every month it seems like there's more and more people I want to commission because there's too many amazing artists out there. Honestly I usually just wind up jumping on specials/deals when artists have them and stalk the front page for newly uploaded YCHs because that prevents me from being forced to actually make a decision >3<

Wow, I wish I could get commissions from people that often! Very occasionally I get one at random from someone who is about to fall off a financial cliff unless they get the work but I can't usually justify spending money on myself otherwise as my income is very patchy. Usually I just give all the money I get to me, if you want I'll let you give it to me too!!

.......mmmm......just do the ol'pick a taxi service method!
I.E. make a list of all the artist you like, close your eyes, wave your finger about and the see which one it lands on.
(Used to, we would do that with the Yellow pages when looking for a taxi while partying......I'll just stop there because Now I'm starting to show my age.. )

as of late I decide like this:

-I have been waiting for a LOOONG time for them to open, and know exactly what to ask for
or
-the YCH is just too good to pass. and I knoe exactly what character to submit.

the artist being in need of funds does help deciding, too. :P

It ended up too overwhelming to go through all the artists I love looking for those who were open, so I went with someone who is both a friend and an amazing artist and I can't wait to see what she does :)
