Your Opinion Is Needed! - Commissions vs. Personal Art
10 years ago
I've been curious what the majority of fandom members think of this.
Do you think it's wrong, or maybe just irresponsible, for an artist to work on personal art along with commissions? Do you feel like they should work on nothing but commissions until they're finished, then personal art?
Tell me what you think!
Edit: I do not think it's wrong or irresponsible to work on personal art and commissions at once, so long as the artist is not putting off commissions too much and everyone is happy with their turn-around.

-Is an artist and commissioner-
Now you can communicate with the buyer (alien to a lot of people new to commissioning and working with customers in general) and ask for an extension if you want some time to work on personal stuff, but you must remember that you promised it would be done within a certain time frame and if they say "no" to an extension that they are not being unfair - they simply want what they paid for.
If you can manage doing personal art and still meet your deadlines then no one has the ground to complain to you. Bottom line is you're doing what you're paid to do. I see the problems when artists work on personal art and don't get permission to extend deadlines and leave their customers in the dark wondering what the status of their piece is.
Often artists will take on more work than they are comfortable completing and get stressed due to having a lot of deadlines; often leading to a shut-down of communication and a lot of angry people which also adds to the stress. I like to tell people in customer service: it's better to under promise and over achieve than to over promise and under achieve.
To sum it up: as long as you're meeting deadlines, or communicating new ones, personal art can be completed alongside commissions but you as an artist must be realistic with yourself about workload to ensure you complete it all.
other than that no, theres not a problem. Communicaiton is key :3
