You know what really pisses me off? -self taught artist rant

When people say "I'm a self taught artist uwu" and expect that means that they are somehow better or did more hard work than people who did art at college or at university or an art school.
Nope we don't get shown how to draw
we don't get given amazing tutorials that you cant find outside of art schools
we don't get told the secret of the universe
You know what happens in an art class?
We draw.
That's literally it.
In art classes we don't get tutorials that are any different than you can find on the internet when it comes to light sources or anatomy. In fact a lot of art classes don't even give you tutorials they just set up something for you to draw and tell you to draw it over and over again from different angles and shit.
Half the tutorials my art teachers have given me were literally taken from the internet and printed out for us and not even made by the teacher themselves.
So some of you might say "Oh but you get constant feedback on your art by professionals!"
Fuck no.
You know who gives me feedback on my art?
Fucking other students thats who.
The teachers rarely ever tell you anything about your work, sometimes if they get bored they will hover behind you and point out a mistake and then walk off to the next person, but that's about it.
And I suppose you would say that going to art school makes you a better artist.
Nope.
Half of my class were fucking tracers and copiers.
And guess how much better they got at the end of the two years?
Not. one. fucking. bit.
Why?
Because they fucking didn't do shit.
They copied art for their art assignments, they dicked around in lessons and they put little to no effort into every drawing they did. They came into art school shit, and they left shit.
You only get out of your art what you put in.
You put in little you get out little improvement.
you put in a lot you get out lots of improvement.
Art school or not, we are ALL self taught artists. We all teach ourselves how to draw through the help of tutorials, and effort and hard work. Art school doesn't make you a better artist. You do. So stop acting like you are somehow superior to the people who have put not only the time and effort into their art but their money as well.
1. space and tools to practise with
2. professional connections to help further your career
that's about it
even then 2 requires work on your end?!
like part of the reason I DIDN'T do an art course is because I figured there is actually very little difference between going self taught and going to college for it for the most part
I got some amazing instruction at my highschool because the teachers there went above and beyond to improve everyones' technical skills (whereas after highschool the focus is on other things like stylisation and forming a coherent concept) and they got really impressive results. kids who could barely draw stickfigures, and some who only took the subject because they thought it would be easy would come out of the course with things like this:

bear in mind that is is work done by 15-18 YEAR OLDS LIKE HOLY SHIT.
but they got to that standard on their own efforts. the teachers were great, but in art you have to actually DO the tasks set to achieve this level of work
at that school, the people who didn't put in effort dropped the course so fast because it is intense there. it's an amazing example of art teaching at its best, and even then it's like 10% teacher input 90% your own work
Its about half art schools give you tools and the other half makes you pay for it yourself and 90% of the time the ones that make you pay for it yourself have their own convenient shops to rip you off out of more money :/
Don't get me wrong, the environment is helpful in a way because they basically force you to draw even when you don't want to. But if you put that effort and draw just as much as an art student you would literally get the exact same results. So it is good for people with lack of motivation in going and getting to draw.
Some art teachers can be really good - the sound of that one is amazing those kids are super lucky. Some are lazy as hell though or have had their spirit broken by the school system. The only lesson where we get taught anything is in the 3D lesson and that's because the program is too complicated to navigate on your own. Traditional drawing/Life drawing and Digital art you're just left to work it out on your own - but then the teachers who teach that are kind of just... dead inside?? Considering the funding the course gets I don't blame them.
At uni there are so many drop outs because of how crazy the course is. There's been so many people who showed up because "Oh I like games and doodling" and they literally just fail within the first 3 months and quit but still have to pay the full 9k for the year. I myself literally had to restart the first year because it was that crazy - meaning I have to give them an extra 9000 to repeat a year of a three year course. I'm literally gonna be £36k in debt on student loan payments that go directly to my university alone not including my housing cost, my materials cost and food budget.
Literally the only reason I'm at university doing art is because of reason 2 + the fact that all game companies now wont accept new people (without like.. 10 years game art experience) unless they have a degree in some form of art, those with game art specific degrees are better.
god the education system is slowly and horribly breaking I hate to think how much worse it's gonna get...
yep our school is lucky to have two teachers in particular
they're leaving soon and.. just watch the grades and quality plummet lol orz;
yeahhh same deal here only I'm doing a physics degree so at least I get value for money because of all the lectures we have... '-'
they would be way more productive and enriching if departments could afford to fund more things for students..
Draw big
Be flexible
Draw this.
Draw this 100 times until it looks decent.
Now draw it better.
You think it's better? Draw it in a different style.
Anime is the devil
Of all the things they did, they said that about 500 times xD
