AdBlock Plus filters to hide Google ads but keep furry ones
10 years ago
Earlier today I discovered that Furaffinity has stepped to a new low: Implementing Google ads. They were tricky to find because they only appear occasionally, and use the same slot as an old ad. Needless to say, I immediately enabled AdBlock Plus on the site. I'm here for furry stuff, not to hear about all the crap on this planet that I have nothing to do with.
There was however a problem: By default, AdBlock Plus disables all ads. This includes the old ones, which are strictly about Furaffinity artists or other furry / brony stuff. I still want these on! So I read a bit about filters and their regular expressions, looked at FA's HTML code, and managed to put together a working configuration. I decided to share these settings with everyone in a journal, so other people who despise the Google ads but enjoy the Furaffinity ones can filter them accordingly.
Disclaimer: This journal is not intended to harm the income Furaffinity gets from ads! Honestly, everyone reading this probably has an ad blocker or at least heard of one years ago, and whether they get one or not is certainly not influenced by me. If anything this will help the site, because people who already blocked all ads due to the Google ones can now re-enable the Furaffinity ads.
Anyway, the filter rules are now maintained on my GitHub account. Open up the Filter Preferences, go to Filter Subscriptions, choose to add a different subscription, and use the raw text file from the repository: Repository, Raw.
Explanation: The first filter enables the main #.ads element. The ##ad-2 and ##ad-4 are the two ads at the top-right of the page. ##ad-extra-flat is the ad in the center... note that this is where the Google ads appear, and I'm not sure if anything fandom relevant will go here again, so commented this one out for the time being (this also removes the blank banner and optimizes space). The last rule allows the www/delivery/* URL pattern on Furaffinity, which is blocked by default as it's a common formula for ads.
Please also share this and spread the word if possible! That will keep furry artists who buy ads on FA from being affected by users who enable ad blockers exclusively for the Google ads.

FA+

I can only imagine you are using an older version of ABP, which might not recognize some filter settings... mine is 2.6.9.1. If it's not that, it must be an issue with Chrome I imagine. Sorry I can't think of more, especially without more feedback.
This work amazingly for me.
