I'm going to make this quick because I already spent 20 minutes trying to give somebody "advice" on dA that they not only completely disregarded, but even SAID they didn't read a word of it.
I'm really tired of people saying stuff like "how come popular artists never reply to people" and "how come popular artists are only friends with the other popular people".
I think the reason popular people don't want to talk to anyone is because they've TRIED talking to people and it's just screwed them over every time. You don't think some of your favorite artists who SEEM like nice people really ARE nice people? Of COURSE they're nice people! They read all of your messages and they're always thankful for your compliments. They don't have to reply with "thank you". I know it's frustrating, but some people get so crammed up with messages they absolutely CAN'T reply.
But then there are people who get much too clingy, and say that you're their favorite artist, and yet all they're doing is using you for attention. They draw YOUR characters and say that it's for you when in reality that just want you to add them to your watch so they can get attention because you got them on your "Following" list. Well, let me be frank about something.
If you really love someone for their art, why do you care if THEY follow you or not? If you want to be their friend, BE THEIR FRIEND! Don't be a weird clingy asswipe who draws them gift art JUST for their attention. And if you don't think I know what I'm talking about...I do.
There is an artist on dA that I really....adore. I love her style, her characters, and she's just overall a really nice person. I WISH she would notice me. Does she talk to me? Not really. Does she watch me? Nope. But you wanna know something? I'm not the only person who loves her. There are hundreds of people who love and admire her, and I'm sure a LOT of them are nice, friendly people who she talks to as well. But a popular artist does NOT have to watch you and a popular artist DOES NOT have to reply to every damn thing you type. Hell, I'm just happy to SEE her art at all! The main thing I derive from her is inspiration. (and if you want to know who I'm talking about, just note me, I'm sure we can agree that she's pretty awesome :D)
Basically...I'm getting to that point (on dA) where I'm getting some younger people who are really inspired by my art. And while some of them are REALLY nice, some of them are beginning to get passive aggressive with me all because "I'm not watching them". Watching people is not hard to do at all, but THIS is the reason why it's a problem: why are you going to ALLOW someone to call you out and say "hey why aren't you watching me?" Am I INCLINED to watch you just because you're nice to me? Nope. I watch people because I WANT to; good artist or bad artist, I will watch someone if I consider them a friend. I DO NOT watch people just because they ask me. And quite honestly, getting passive aggressive with your favorite artist is not only going to make YOU feel bad; it makes THEM feel bad too.
All in all....I just...I really wish I could be everyone's friend, but how are you supposed to be everyone's friend if they're the ones shaming you into doing so? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be friends with someone who doesn't mean their friendship back. And no, not all young people do this, if anything I'm very thankful to have the audience I do on dA, it's just...really hard to get across my feelings for some people, and then to have them IGNORE it?? What's the point in being all giddy over your favorite artist if you're just going to IGNORE them? Just...wow.

And yeah, took growing up and going through shit to realize it ALSO it's dA; bound to have drama regardless of whether they like you or hate you.
This is 100% true
so yea, always judge a person by their actions and not their art.
I find that when you learn how shitty someone is as a person their art work turns pretty ugly 8) from my own experience.

You're right though. And do people not understand that popular artists get spammed with messages? It would be soooo much work to reply to all of them.
I'm not popular on dA at all anymore. I never really was but I used to have a bunch of friends there! But anyways.
Lately, there are some people that desperately want to have my attention. At least, that's what it looks and feels like to me. They're being a bit too sweet to me and it gets creepy. I feel like a celebrity with creepy fans. It's weird because, again, I'm NOT popular at all. Those people just got to know me somehow. I appreciate all my watchers and I'm thankful for them wanting to stick with me and my art. But...egh...They scare me.
They're not asking me to follow them back, luckily. That's a different story. On dA (and honestly, other sites such as Twitter and Tumblr too), I will ONLY follow you if I like the content that you post. We can be friends without me following you. But if I really don't like your art or other content, there's no fun in following you. And you're not gonna force me into following you. That's not how I work and you'll learn it the hard way.
Maybe I'm just mean. But that's how it is for me.

Yeah, I see what you mean 0-0 I used to be popular back in the LOS fandom, and then again in the Skylanders fandom for a little while, and it really died down for a long time to the point where I just stopped caring about that whole popularity thing. I'm happy to make it to this point! But it is pretty stressful and definitely a job to have to deal with all the time. It's just hard to be on dA checking messages daily. I let them build up over a week or two and have a mass deletion/go-through day, makes it a bit easier for me to have time to draw other stuff in the meantime. But it's hard when people are breathing down your neck and expecting you to reply to them the minute they post the comment .^. Not gonna change my schedule just to prevent people from getting 'mad' at me LOL XD
Eeeeugh yeah....sounds really clingy and unreasonable to me. I would ignore those people, and if any of them make you feel uncomfortable, either don't reply to them or just block them :D I've had to do that on several occasions in the past.
And I'm the same way, I only follow people for content I like. And there are plenty of people I really like that I simply don't watch. Doesn't mean I don't like them : D
