I cannot say that I am in the "fandom" yet.
I bought the game and I am trying to run my own server to play on. However, I need to put a new OS in my server machine first.
So I have not played it at all yet.

each to their own, depends on the server and you have to be sneaky, like building your bases in out of the way places and trying not to attract attention. We lasted for 4 days on a rather bad server before we were discovered XD when they did raid us, they not only killed our whole tribe but also demolished the entire 2 story house we had built, right to the last bit of foundation

Thats multiplay games for you, at least 7 days to die has a single player option.
