Student, as I am still working on my BSc. Never to old, etc.
As to what it involves, this is the first of two field schools I'll be doing (the next is a whole month next summer). As this is the first time we're actually working in the field, it is primarily about seeing geological features in situ, as well as learning how to do field surveying and plotting said geological features on a map. Field measurement of distance, thickness, bearing, strike and dip (direction of a feature's face and the angle at which it heads into the Earth)... all of these and more.
56: If I could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be ?
Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Good choice! I wonder what he thinks about the current flyby of Pluto, I was too young to really remember the Neptune flypast and I've been more excited about this than I thought I would be. It must have been amazing to be there when the first studies of the planets took place in the 60's and 70's.
Heh... Voyager 2 reached its closest position to Neptune on my 17th birthday. :) As he is an astrophysicist (another area of hobby-level learning on my part), I'm sure he's as excited (if not more so) to see what will be coming out over the next year or so. They say the data will take 16 months to transmit back. I'd be tearing out my hair were I one of the folks who are waiting for it!
63: Do I believe in ghosts ? How about aliens ?
Yes to both, while I am a scientist I do know we don't know and can't explain everything.
Interesting, have you had any strange experiences yourself?
I've had a few, mostly having to do with spirits and things not being where they should be. No ghost sightings or anything like that... but I do sometimes pick up what seems to me to be focused emotion. I blame my Scots/Scots-Irish ancestry for some of this. ;) I've also been able to describe someone's room to them, in detail, including where they were standing in the room and where individual items were... along with the color. My mother, when she was younger, had a bit of the second-sight for the future. Not so much now.
64: Do I believe in magic ?
Fireball type? No. Sympathetic, yes as (to me) it's an expansion of quantum theory.
I had to look sympathetic magic up as I hadn't heard that term before. I'm skeptical about supernatural stuff in general but there is definitely a lot we don't know about reality.
I tend to be skeptical as well, to be honest. The reason I specifically mentioned sympathetic magic is one of the tenets of quantum physics: observing the experiment changes the experiment. In other words, the scientist is influencing the experiment merely by observing. If that happens on the quantum scale, what would the focused will and intention of a group of people do?
109: Been outside my home country ?
Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Crete, Scicily, Gibraltar, St. Maartin
I wasn't sure where St. Maartin was so checked google and came across this image:

o_O I'm amazed that plane made the runway coming in at that height and angle, they look like they're going to skim the beach!
Yeah, I've seen that picture before. Scary stuff... and I don't even *want* to think about the noise! Fortunately I didn't find that particular beach. Enjoyed my time there though, and wouldn't mind going back with someone in the future. Couldn't live there though, too hot and humid for this son of the Pacific NorthWest!
115: Been in airplane ?
Several times, and am a part of the US Civil Air Patrol.
Very cool :) What sort of planes do you fly?
Unfortunately I am not yet a pilot. As part of the CAP, I ride in Cessna 182s. I've also ridden in several different commercial aircraft, and even wound up flying from Sicily to Crete on a C-130 cargo aircraft.
119: Learned another language ?
Chinese, Spanish, Japanese... and forgot it all.
Also very cool, I'm sure it would come back to you if you tried speaking it again though.
It does, a bit. I managed enough of my Spanish to explain to a Guatemalan how to use her computer in a pidgin of Spanish and English.
Thank you CelticWolf, that was an interesting read, its not often you find someone who has an interest in both the scientific and (for want of a better word) mystical side of things.
You are quite welcome. I tend to see science as giving us the 'how', or process behind how things are done. For the big questions, the ultimate 'why' questions... that's the realm of the mystical and the spiritual, at least to me. Science is, after all, only the best explanation at the current time. Spirituality and mysticism are the same way. Ultimately, both require faith in the answer given. As a Catholic, I know you have miracles as part of the tenets of faith (I'm not saying belief, merely tenets). Even the Vatican uses science before declaring a miracle. Plus, as I often like to point out to those who are always putting down people of faith, the Jesuits have typically always been on the front lines of science and philosophy.
It's funny, at one time, though my personal philosophy (not faith) is Taoist, I have once or twice considered becoming an Episcopalian/Anglican priest. I don't see a conflict between the philosophy and the faith, nor between science and both. It is, again in my opinion, the other side of the coin. Of course, I'm also known to be strange. ;)
Oh, and if you want, you can just call me CW. Most of my friends do... unless they're calling me by my real name, or just calling me names in general. :D

Sometimes I sleep in, sometimes I don't. I'm one of those folks that actually needs somewhere between 9-10 hours a night, and I don't currently sleep very well... so it turns into something closer to 12 hours in bed with the 9-10 asleep.
I have no idea how you did those rather neat boxed answers but:
Just use 'quote' and '/quote' between square brackets ( the [ and ] ).
Yes, I'm only kidding :) Its much better than the attitude that seems to be so common these days where people are too cynical towards movies and books to just suspend disbelief and enjoy them.
To be fully honest, I split the difference. Part of me looks at a movie and analyzes it, looking for plot holes, techno weirdness, and historical inaccuracies. The other side, the side that is a writer, just goes with the flow and enjoys the characterization and interactions.
Do you mind if I ask when you served?
I don't mind at all. I served from 1994 to 1997. I was a Nuclear-Qualified Electrician's Mate (ship's electrician), and mustered out as a Petty Officer 3rd Class. The Royal Navy doesn't have an equivalent rank, but I would be considered a Petty Officer... though it's kinda between Petty Officer and Able Seaman.
"Student, as I am still working on my BSc. Never to old, etc.
Sounds fun! I'd love to 'go back to school' myself but unfortunately work is taking up too much of my time and energy to seriously consider it.
To get your Piled Higher and Deeper, er... PhD, I assume? ;) If I may ask, what did you get your Master's in?
It was really surprising to find out what Pluto really looked like, I guess I had the mental image that it looked basically like the moon and its not like that at all. And yes, but there's enough information in there to keep quite a few astronomers and scientists going for the rest of their careers. :)
Agreed. I think the color is what surprised me most about Pluto. Mars I understand why it's red, and I get that Jupiter has the red spot... but light pink? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
We definitely don't have a complete understanding of the universe around us yet, there may be some surprises still to come.
There always will be, we will never be able to understand everything. If we did, then we would have no other reason to exist other than to carry on our biologically mandated function: creating more humans.

That's an interesting idea, if people really could affect things just by thinking about it.
It's not just thought, but intent... focus if you will. Consider playing a dice game, you have just rolled several dice and are needing a particular number. All of the dice have settled but for one of them, and you need a particular number or range of numbers. Mentally, as is our nature, you focus on that one die, hoping that it comes up where you need it to... and it does. Was it pure coincidence, or was it your focus changing the probability and balance to make the die fall as it did? Food for thought.
Still neat!
Yep. :) The CAP is similar to the RAF Air Cadets, except we tend to focus on emergency services/disaster relief as well as the education and leadership training aspect.
I wish more people had the same view of things you have, it would make the world a much more pleasant place, and thanks I'll remeber that. :)
It would be nice, yes... but it would not be our nature. People will always find a way to disagree to the point of conflict or even war. It all boils down to 'us' versus 'them'. If it's not politics, it's religion or physical differences that someone will use as an excuse. I will protect myself and what (or who) I consider mine against anything that *isn't* me or mine. It's part of all species, really... a biological imperative. Doesn't mean we can't fight against it though. ;)
I can understand that regret. My career got chopped short due to the draw down in the late nineties. One way to help assuage that, assuming you have the time, is to get involved with the RAF Air Cadets as an adult member, if you can. With your education and focus, you could provide good background for the youngsters.
Yep, I do intend to do it but it will have to be part-time. I studied Intelligence and International Relations, *very* interesting course!
I can believe it! One of my many and varied majors in the past was History with a focus on Pre-Christian Celtic history... though I do dabble in modern military history. With your interest in the Cold War, I have to wonder if the interest informed your choice of degree, or vice versa? I also wonder about your take on the recent (last few years) activity by the Russian Federation, as well as your take on the Greek/EU issue. I know economics isn't your strong point, but it'd be nice to hear/read what someone outside of the US things who isn't from the BBC. :P
We were having a similar discussion at work today interestingly enough, and a colleague (without my prompting) stated basically the same thing as you, and he's very much a sceptic.
One theory amongst many, I'm sure... I just feel that that theory has the most traction behind it. It's always fun to look at the little interconnections between things (the Connections TV show for instance) and see what may be influencing what or whom. Kind of like how the flow of water in a river against the banks slows the main portion of the current. You can't see it (unless you dye the water), but it's there and has an effect.
True, but I hope we can all agree more than we disagree. :)
Says you! >.< I kid, of course... and it's certainly to be hoped for. Even from an old hawk like myself. I remember reading once somewhere that it is not the civilian that prays most for peace, it is the soldier, sailor, marine, and airman that do. After all, they (we) are the ones to lay down their life in the defense of their fellow man. Then again, it is not their job to die for their country, but to make the other poor bastard die for his.... Make of that what you will. ;)
Of course. I have a tendency to throw things out and see if they stick. It's a bad habit (hobbit?) of mine. Having free time can always be a problem.
I went back to university because I was very dissatisfied by the situation I found myself in after my first degree, I decided this time to study something that interests me rather than being directly vocational.
Makes sense to me! Better than taking 20mumble years to figure out your first degree. ;)
I would love to talk about politics etc but unfortunately at the moment my time online is very much 'hit and run', perhaps after the summer
Absolutely no problem. I'm always up for a discussion/debate/friendly argument... so whenever you want to have one, just hit me up. It's always better than the drivel that has been put on TV recently. Of course, that's not saying much... -.-
