I often find bright colours tend to cheer me up, as well as attempting something I've never drawn before.

I know that feeling, perhaps I'll give it a go myself! (Otherwise I was going to draw the most sickeningly cute thing I could think of, that's my other standby for coming up with happy things xD)

And yeah, art for art, usually it's something relatively equivalent (e.g. headshot for headshot, fullbody for fullbody, colour+shading for colour+shading), but other than that it's as simple as picking what you'd like drawn and letting the other person draw it! (For example, I've seen how well you do males, so I'd probably get my mate's character (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16915773/) as a pinup! (Bonus points for crossdressing, but that's entirely optional!)

Would be good practice... Well, as a test run... wanna do an art trade then? Your mates pinup for one of mine's? I don't care which xD
