A med-dark grey/brown short fur ? ?
Apparently it's in short supply wherever I've managed to find similar - I'd need about 3-3.5 yards of it.
(Fursuitsupplies says out of stock but also that theres 3.5 yards left which is confusing - im gonna go with saying theyre out of stock but if anyone knows better, let me know)

Maybe I'm looking for a lighter grey that I can paint - softness isn't the goal here, I just need something with a short pile to hide seams in - perhaps like the lighter greys of your raccoon tail or the moxie tail's base?

The newest raccoon tails in my gallery are made with crcraft's grey frost teddy (or is it cubby?) it's a really light grey with dark charcoal tips. I'd almost say that you'd be better of finding a tan colour and greying it instead of the other way around. cr has some more sort of taupey colours in their teddy section though that might be better for you, maybe just try getting the swatch set from them!
