It's not the DM I tend to have problems with, but the players. And RL too. Was asked to join a local group that was starting. One person jumped on cleric so was like 'Cool, heals'. And I took druid to be a jack of all trades type. Turns out that the cleric didn't take a single healing spell, and he only wanted cleric because it looked cool.

I left after the first session.

Well, you got to the first session, at least. but that "Point buy" system makes it so...well...you can easily cheat this system with this point buy stuff, it's not even funny. have all at least +0 modifiers, with anything higher in what you need. Whereas you roll them and can get anywhere from 6-18 and have to work with what you got!

It's because a lot of people complain about rolled stats being unfair. So, since formalized play groups (the official sanctioned ones) try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, they take out anything that makes people feel bad...and yes, in some cases this includes telling DMs to do everything in their power not to kill characters. It's the same reason why in editions past 3.5, there's no longer any negative modifiers to ability scores. Heaven forbid that someone should not be perfectly equal to someone else. Someone in a board room somewhere decided that no one wants to balance pros and cons, and made the races be all positives.

It's not, but it also makes things easier to balance when you know most people will come out swinging with a +4 or +5 to attack, and that the ac of a tank in 4th would start at 19 or 20. As a gm, it's a whole bunch easier to balance things when I can have a fairly good idea of what they will be bringing to the table, and not 1 person with a +5 and three people with a +1 or +2.

Don't get me wrong, rolling for stats is great fun, but as a gm I'd rather you not

If you wanna save a lot of money, time, and stress, stay away from it XD

If you have a good group of friends that can teach you, go for it.

But yeah, I can imagine how hard it is to get into a good group / find a good DM, so far I only ever found one good group - but I guess that's not a problem entirely restricted to this site, isn't it? By my personal experience, it's just as hard to get to a good player experience even IRL/over skype.

I think that's too much of a cliché theese days - at least personally I've never seen that "obvious nerdy type" in an RPG (D&D, DSA, whatever). I suspect it's because the "nerd" stereotype usually is to shy to roleplay properly? By my experience (again, biased) players often fit the "loudmouth"/"wannabe" stereotype much better ;3

And they all were pretty well integrated, social and not shy / holding back at all. But then again, could just be a regional phenomena or just coincidence!

My DnD experiences vary! Mostly with fun bouncy people, but definetely nerdy (smart and educated~)

Sucks that you had such a bad experience. I've tried to get online groups going (and get into groups) for years now and they never come to fruition. At least I have a group IRL that meets semi-regularly.

Really, you just need to find a good DM and friends that will ACTUALLY use their heads and play out being their characters instead of getting butthurt about the game.

It's more fun when you don't take it seriously. But yeah I'm sorry you had a bad experience, hopefully you'll try it again :c

The Tabletop RPG community is honestly a lot harder to find real decent people in because of how open and free it is. There's not real "end all, be all" type deal that a lot of games have and stick with. As such, you get people who are just as random and unreliable as the game system itself. It doesn't help when it comes to the online setting either, as I've had some of the worst experiences with people on here or roll20 (a rather large tabletop RPG site).

You kinda just have to keep looking for that group you really click with. In the 7 years I've been doing this, I have 2 or 3 groups (about 10 or so people) that I regularly play with that I actually enjoy playing with.

Im lucky enough to have a pretty rambunctious, but otherwise stable irl group xD

gosh that sucks D: i'm sorry to hear that. my mate uses roll 20 for his dnd games and tries to be really thorough and consistent with his gameplay. i'm sorry to hear you had such a rough time with yours though ;c

I've thought about getting into Pathfinder....
Table top games are just hard for me to get into.
I understand the roleplay of it all but for some reason if I'm not sitting infront of a screen roleplaying it just seems awkward to me. ^^;
I got invited to a Shadowrun campaign....again still iffy. :/

Well that's really shitty; I've been lucky to only have 2 crap DMs.
Hope you can find a good new group; I know how hard that can be.
