Patreon really needs to deal with it somehow. The system is just asking to be abused as it is now :/

It may not be false pledges but Patreon issues that they're having.

This is the like 4th shady or scam-ish related happening I've heard from people regarding Patreon today. What is going on over there? lol

They do that to steal your art, actually. They use a script that makes the pledges, downloads all the art, then cancel payment and post it on their own site, and there's already a petition to have it removed... I don't have the information about it, since it's already buried in other journals.

Well, the problem is that it can be done manually, without any scripts.

Well take away their ability to do it with scripts and they're less likely to take the time to do it manually.

Even simpler:
After a pledge, have the system wait a given time before granting access - at which time the pledge cannot be revoked then anymore.

Wasn't there a option for that already but the people with the patreons just don't use it often? Could be misremembering.

I logged into the Patreon page only to set up support pledges for Silnat and BSP.

It is not working - I mean the 'stealing' bit - for a lot of artists they now take a roster of WHO DID PAY for the month and email out the art to their patrons; so Patreon is no longer being used for art distribution. The folks creating the scripts are getting like 15% of the total art from these artists, if even that.

I'm betting on a combination of issues but I'll admit, the first place my mind goes is right to how people make false deposits into bank accounts. While the later the purpose I understand, I don't understand the purpose behind false pledges (beyond trolling that is) when they do happen.

The scams evolved to take advantage of the Patreon policy of "If you pledge but can't afford it later, you can retract it before it's committed and won't be charged." Pledge $1, download the art you want, retract pledge.

I wish I could blacklist some backers that took the highest slot and then never paid. I hate thinking Im going to get a certain amount and then I get like 60% of it.

This is why most I have followed would wait for those pledges to be confirmed before releasing art to their respective tiers.

Aside from that, I have heard this occur many times. Sadly people are just low.

Well, another solution would be to have loyalty rewards? Like: If you are 3 months in, you automatically get access to more content? 6 months, you get even more? Not sure how Patreon works from artist's side... This would still allow people to change their minds without there being as much benefit to trolling/griefing. There should be a minimum non-refundable transaction portion... $1 is not a lot to lose if you change your mind. The original poster should post the suggestions and comments from this topic to Patreon people. If all the paid artists in here mentioned this topic, it might get implemented, or inspire even better ideas from their staff.
