Awful english dubbing. How can you survive this?!
I just realized something over the last few years, and it's quite... annoying.
How comes that so many english dubs (of usually popular series) are SO DAMN AWFULL? I'm comparing it to german dubs of course, where most voices are more... normal I'ld say - at least in a few cases.
Examples:
Rescue Rangers (I just watched an english episode while drawing the last pic) - holy shit, I couldn't watch it in english. Chip's squeaky, barely understandable noise forced me to stop that video 5 minutes in. In german, the voice is still kind of terrible but a lot more bearable (well, maybe it's the language?).
Then, the same for some games like Baldur's Gate. Imoen is so fucking annoying in english - in german, she's jokey yes, but she doesn't act like a 12 year old child. But Minsc is better I suppose... still.
I know there have been a few other examples lately, but I can't remember the details right now - but it was often enough to ask myself the question how you can enjoy theese strange choices / dubs D:

But my perspective might be a bit skewed. Germans dubbing everything coming from English speaking countries (even the James Bond movies), ehh, sounds a bit ridiculous to me. All that effort, just to ruin the perfect original voices. I've been watching subtitles for the good part of my life, and I can't imagine watching a movie without them, even if it's in my native language.
And yeah, disfigurement of Chip & Dale's speech shouldn't be a problem for native American speakers. In their brains they have integrated hardware accelerator for deciphering rough English. While you have to understand English using a software-based processor. :P
And I guess I used the word "dub" wrongly - I generally meant what you call it when people give virtual characters a voice (cartoons, 3d movies, games) - don't know the right term there, I always thought it's "dub".
Well, germans have terrible voice choices as well (again, in my oppinion). I found Smaug in Hobbit to sound RIDICULOUS, but some seemed to like it. It's just not the voice I'ld put on a big dragon. But then, japanese stuff is even worse - the new DBZ Super? Goku sounds like a shrill child (apparently it always was like that, don't know, was never forced to watch it in japanese), and King Kai? Sorry.... but WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING? That actor talks in a bored, completly monotone voice (I can't understand a word obviously, but I can still hear the monotony out of it) while the character on screen is yelling and wiggling his arms in rage! What the fuck? It's just so wrong. And pretty much ANY other voice for goku is better... xD
But yes, i do agree. Sometimes the english variants sound just awful. Maybe because americans think that any young or feminim character needs a ultra high pitched shrieking voice or something. Also, the original voice isn't always the best voice, even in movies. I mean, just look at Schwarzenegger. His german dubbed voice (not himself) sounds so much better then the real one. Or Bruce Willis. etc. etc.
Yeah you're right - Arnold has to be dubbed too... never thought about that hahaha, it's kind of funny that he doesn't dub himself (or does he sometimes?). But to be honest, that's something where I almost only have the english voices in mind, I can't even recall the german voices for Arnold or Buce, etc - I'll have to look into it!
And yes, it certainly was - but that's why I was so surprised to find out how I have so much trouble even going through a single episode... xD
