Three Books
In the original theatrical release of The Time Machine, there is scene at the end just after the main character disappears and returns to the future he had previously visited. One of the other characters notices that three books are missing from the shelf and the question the audience is left with is "what three books would you have chosen to take with you?" or something to that effect.
For me this was probably the most memorable part of the movie, and for good reason. What three books would I chose to bring to a world in which humanity had started over?
No. 1, dictionary.
Even if I could only chose one book, without hesitation this would be my choice. I have several American English dictionaries to chose from but out of them I would pick Webster's unabridged international as it's by far the thickest book I own. Its 5 1/2 inches thick! it may be a bit on the old side but it is still my first choice, because with the establishment of language, everything else falls into place.
No. 2, Physicians desk reference.
The second biggest book I own, being 4 inches thick. Okay, this one is slightly more centralized to the scenario depicted in the film and the book, but it's still of great import to a budding society.
No. 3, Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.
Unfortunately the edition of this title that I have is probably out of date but it has an inestimable wealth of scientific knowledge ideal for any civilization starting from scratch.
