HISTORY
Candons evolved from packs of canines who lived around poison swamp-lands in Sirisola. Sirisola is a world of creatures taking refuge from worlds in the deepest parts of the galaxy, though sometimes new creatures evolve. The Canines on Sirisola had adapted to the environment there and were much more advanced than the canines we know on Earth today. After swimming and living around these parts the canines built up resistance to the toxic land and started to adapt by gaining new features every generation. After many many generations a new species evolved, completely detached from the canine genus.
Candon's are classified as mammals but they do not have real fur unless their genetics have been altered. They are omnivores and their diet consists of meats, fruits, and various berries and roots. Candons are all their own and can reproduce other Candons and are a complete species. Candons are different from their canine ancestors and have bitter or aggressive behavior most of the time, and tend to live as by themselves as loners (certain subspecies may live in packs). They only come together to breed once a year in the fall, where the males will battle for the females with their poison horns, many times this can lead to paralysis or death.
After mating, female candons will carry their pups in a womb-like structure that is protected behind the thick walls of the poison sack. During the time the female Candon is carrying her young she builds a den, usually carving it out of the ground or finding a fallen tree to shelter under. Candons are live bearers and give birth to a litter of 1-3 pups in the spring.
Young candons are completely spineless and blind once born and will stay in the whelping den for about a month. In that time they develop so quickly and live off of meat, berries, and leaves that their mothers store in their stomachs; turning it into a mushy smoothie and then regurgitating it back up for their young. The mothers poison at this time is turned into a nutrient rich liquid that is not harmful to her young and is excreted through her mouth to give to them. It is sometimes referred to as "candon milk" but candon's are the only mammal to not produce milk and they do not possess teats. The young will grow immensely in the summer and will go on daily outings with their mother to scavenge and hunt. After two years they will be fully grown and ready to live on their own. Male candons will mature and be ready to mate once they are 2 and that is what drives them away from their mothers care. Females however will not be sexually mature until they are 4 years of age, and most of the time they still roam with their sister(s) in small bands until they are of age to mate.
ANATOMY AND BODY FUNCTIONS
Color Patterns/Markings- Patterns on their base skin are usually 3 or more colors that gradate from darkest on the top, to lightest on the bottom. They may have various other colors of spotting, mottled, striped, or blotches on their skin on top of the base colors. On top of all this they may have various sock patterns on their legs, muzzle markings, ear markings, and light under tail and neck coloring. River, Forest, Swamp, and any genetically altered or mutated Candon's tend to have brighter coloring while mountain and desert candon's usually have colors that blend in with their surroundings easier. This is due to the little coverage they will find trying to find prey so they need to be able to sneak up and hunt in the open and to hide from competing species.
Social Behavior- Swamp, River, and Forest Candon's tend to stick to a solitary lifestyle, except when mating season comes. Many females will have their own territories with one male overlapping many of their territories. Males travel more and need a greater place to hunt and find mates. It has been observed that Desert and Mountain Candon's hunt in small groups, called packs, to help each other as a team and use tactics similar to how lions hunt. These packs are generally bonded well, and may be siblings that grew up together and possibly their mates. Candon's typically have the behavior of canines but are not loyal to humans and cannot be made into pets. They use various yelps, growls, snarls, chuff sounds, and even roar. But they cannot howl like a dog or wolf can. They use tail motions to display a lot of emotion but it is limited by which ways their tails can bend. Ear movements are also a form of communication as well as facial expressions and even excretions of oils through their skin and the glowing of the orbs on their body can be flashed in various codes.
Size- Candons are a little larger than a wolf normally. Through genetic altering and mutations, they can become much larger, up to the size of a dragon even! Though this is extremely rare. Females are smaller than males and are generally swifter and lighter boned. Males are heavier built, with thicker bones and more muscle tone.
Tail- The tails are long and fur-less, almost reptile-like. They have an ominous glowing orb that hovers around the tip of their tail. Their tails are flexible and the tip is always pulled into a curve by the gravitational properties of the orb. The orbs come from the swamp-lands, where the Candon's live, and somehow have attached themselves to these creatures. Some say it is the soul of the creature itself.
Spines- The spines on the back of the Candon's neck and base of tail are similar to porcupine quills. Though they generally tend to be softer and more hairlike in female Candon's, Sometimes, if the spines are not needed they will break and become softer and softer and turn into Candon 'hair', which is a very silky form of the spine that is in no way harmful, more common in females.
When a Candon is agitated, enraged, or afraid, the spines will stick up straight. When in this mode the spines fill will poison fluid (which makes them stand up), and if attacked these spines will release the fluid through the tips and into their victims. Unlike porcupines, Candon's spines do not detach from the body. Though they may break they are always growing and replenishing themselves like hair. The spines can be genetically altered to be even more hair like and loose their poisoning ability, or through enough mutation the spines can completely disappear. In river Candon's the spines may evolve into fin like protrusions.
Antennae- Candon's have 5 antennae on the back of their neck sprouting from areas where there are spines, and three on the base of the tail. These antennae have small orbs on the tips, which glow in darkness. It is said that Candon's gained this feature over breeding by eating the flesh of mutant fish. The mutant fish also had these same antennae and orbs. Orbs can also be genetically altered or mutated into different forms. The orbs are used as warning signals and flashed at different intervals to portray emotions and messages.
Toes and Paws- Candon's only have three toes on each foot (sometimes four), besides for the dewclaw on each front leg. Their paw pads are thick from treading in toxic areas and they have also evolved webbed toes for swimming in the bog-lands. Though some subspecies of Candons who have lived in other habitats lost the webbing on their toes.
Skin- The skin of the Candon is more hide like. It is similar to the dragon's skin though it has no scales. Candon's have evolved this tough hide from their harsh environment. Fur cannot grow in their habitat so Candon's have no real fur. But in other habitats Candon's have been known to evolve 'fur' and 'hair'. Candon's that have the genetics of other animals mixed in with them can have fur but they are mutated or considered hybrid.
Eyes- The eyes have a special extra eyelid, much like a dogs third eyelid. Though this eyelid is more similar to the crocodiles. Candons have two normal eyelids, and a third one under these that is transparent. This helps them see through the water without hurting their eyes. They also have a more sliver-like pupil.
Tongue- The tongues of Candons is pointed at the tip. It resembles that of a skinks but can be any color and is very long-
Ears- The ears are stiff and do not bend. Almost like the cropped ears of a dog. Their ears have cartilage ridges in them which is what makes them stand up. They can however shift their ears to different positions to show what mood they are in just like other canines. Candons can hear very well and their long ears can catch many noises, even underwater.
Nose- Their noses are shaped like those of ungulates. Their nostrils can close when underwater.
Claws- Due to the harsh environment and other uses of defense, they do not need claws. In fact their ancestors claws have eroded and they have adapted without them. This soon became part of the gene-pool and now almost all Swamp Candons are born without claws. Only Candon's that are mutated, live in other biomes, or that are genetically altered may have claws.
Thick Face Spines- These spines are more advanced versions of their neck and tail spines. They are almost like the horns of a dragon. But these can also release poison from their tips and a lot more of it. Never get in a fight with a Candon and go for the neck. They will bash you with these spines and you will not make it out of there. Sometimes the Spines can be different shapes and sizes. Some Candon's are born without these horns, which is rare. Horns may also grow on other parts of the body but this is uncommon.
Poison Sacks- These are located on the chest and belly of Candons. They run from the bottom of the neck all the way to the belly. They are impenetrable sacks used to store the poison for the spines. Their internal organs fit perfectly behind the sacks. Sometimes mutant fish eaten alive and whole can make their way into the poison sacks and live in the Candon. The poison can also glow and can be any color. Occasionally Candon's that live in fresh water can be found to have water in their poison sacks, which allows for fish to be kept as companions.
Poison- All of the poison in the body is a mixture of toxic swamp water and other bodily fluids. Poison's affect on victims can be altered by the types of plants the candon eats. Toxic mushrooms, poison flowers or leaves, berries, etc. can all have an effect on the color and type of poison the candon has. The poison can have paralysis, burning, decaying, blistering, bubbling, and nerve effects on victims. Sometimes their poison can have hallucinogenic properties that will send those affected into a craze, where they will eventually seize and die. As harsh as it seems the candons need their poison for protection and to hunt large and dangerous prey.
Teeth and Saliva- The Candons saliva is poison and the teeth are very sharp. The saliva is poison because their poison sack connects to the mouth through their fangs and back of their throat, often making the saliva very dangerous. They are perfect for snagging up fish and rodents and also for tearing flesh in battles. larger Candon's are able to catch larger prey and dragon sized ones can feast on cows and other large creatures. Occasionally river candon's will not be poisonous, and instead can release squirts of water from their mouth as a surprise deterrent to other animals.
Fungi- Swamp Candons have a strange glowing fungus that grows on them. It is unknown whether or not it affects them and they seem to be just dandy having it grow on them. It is similar to the relationship of sloths and algae. The fungus tends to glow the same colors as their hosts poison.
Mutations and Genetic altering- Candon's can mutate and sometimes successfully breed with other animals, creating mutated versions of Candons. These mutations are rare or uncommon, but you can find almost any type of Candon. Examples are, Dragon, Deer, Bear, Lion, Wolf, Bird, etc. Sometimes Candons have the ability to merge genes with other animals to create Candon's with wings, horns, fur, different tails, and anything you can imagine. Candon's can also morph with minerals, crystals, plants, and other organic material through certain magical properties.
