What the ^^&$# is going on in fandom?!

Good grief. What kind of idiots are we dealing with here?
And it's not just Rainfurrest. MFF has had its share of problems. While I hadn't planned on returning to MFF any time soon, the repeated false fire alarms (and my fursuit is not hot, unlike the usual kind, so standing around outside in November in Chicago in it is a largely hopeless exercise in staying warm) and the hazmat incident of a couple of years ago would have me thinking twice and more about going back.
Frankly, I'm surprised that the Hilton is honoring Rainfurrest's 2016 contract. They would have a defensible position if they were to say "You're done. Don't like it? Sue us." They would have a non-zero chance of winning in court, even if the con could afford to pursue a lawsuit. That kind of concentrated vandalism is something no hotel should have to put up with.
Folks, if you know of someone who's pulling this kind of bullshit, don't be complicit in their destruction. Tell someone. This has to stop.

One of the reasons Mouse and I have not attended Rainfurrest the last few years is because of some of the stuff that was pulled at the con then. It seems to be getting worse not better.
It's really the same thing that wrecked Boulder's Mall Crawl decades ago and San Francisco's Castro Street halloween celebrations a decade ago … I would be surprised if this kind of shit did not occur at Burning Man. So this kind of stupididity is not new; it comes and goes in waves as mundanes discover various things that imaginative people do and appropriate them.
Certain conventions seem to have got a handle on it. MileHiCon, by all accounts, is still small enough to be recognizable to me from, gosh, over twenty years ago. BLFC is growing, but I didn't hear of any horrid things happening there. So my advice would be to go to the smaller conventions.
All that said, I'll still go to FC. And if someone's being a jerk around me, I will do what I can to put an end to it. Whether it's talking to them myself or calling con security on their asses. You can have a good time, but don't be an ass. At BLFC some jerk was sitting in his Loud Gamer Chair right by the registration line that I had no real choice about being in. I asked him politely to turn it down. He didn't, so I yelled at him to turn it down. He got all butt-hurt over being yelled at. (Okay, okay, he didn't hear me when I asked him politely … but that's the point, isn't it? If he had pressed the point I'd have told him that bla bla bla.)
So it's up to those of us who can at least pull off a good imitation of adulting to do that and to discipline the kids who haven't learned how not to be asses.
