3 Month Update from San Francisco: Looking for Roommate(s)
It's been a long while since I posted here! Here's a small update.
My job is going well and I'm feeling upbeat, but despite trying to budget appropriately before accepting my job here, I ran into a big problem: I can't ride mass transit.
Ever since I was very young, I have had a problem with motion sickness that causes unbelievable dizziness, nausea, and problems with equilibrium. Never having lived in a large city before, I've never had to deal with lengthy commutes on buses or trains with frequent starting and stopping motions. I learned the hard way that I am limited to walking or driving a vehicle of my own here (and I no longer own a car). Ferries are out, as well; I tried to commute from across the bay for about 2 weeks and went to work very sick every morning with dizziness lasting for days afterwards. This problem goes back over 30 years and we've never found a way to mitigate it, and it seems I just need to deal with it.
So, I am limited to living very near to work, which is in the heart of San Francisco's financial district where rents are among the highest in the entire United States.
I currently live near Chinatown, but I do not wish to continue paying $4000 a month for a 1-bedroom apartment, so I am looking for sane, responsible, clean roommate(s). Perhaps I'm posting on the wrong web site for this? :)
If anyone is looking for a roommate in San Francisco in Nob Hill, North Beach, SoMa, Chinatown, South Beach, or the vicinity, please let me know. I'm flexible on budget, but I'm hoping for less than ~$2800 a month for my share of expenses.
My needs are actually pretty basic and I'd settle for much less if it meant saving more money; I get fed 3 meals a day at the office and don't even need a kitchen, really!
Just to be clear: There is no emergency and I am not being thrown out of my current apartment; I'm simply looking for ways not to waste most of my income on housing.
All is well otherwise and I am gradually getting my footing here. I'll have more details to share in a bit. Thanks for any help, everyone!

I hope you find something that works out well for your budget~
If could I would go, but for now I am unable to move there.
Hope you find someone soon. Good luck! =3
Best of luck to you, good sir! I'm sure that everything will come together for you soon.
I hope we'll meet soon! I've had my hands full and have not socialized with friends even once since I got here. It's been a rather bumpy 3 months! :P
Having said that, I'd love to have you. And I miss you! :)
I currently live in San Francisco and I whole heatedly understand what you're going through with public transit. I do hope you'll find a good, affordable housing that won't be a broom closet for more than $2800. I'm sure the muni wouldn't be of much help for you either if you wanted to live out in the sunset or inner richmond.
Wish you the best of luck!
The $2800 price point is flexible. I'm paying a lot more than that currently and it's technically affordable, but I'd prefer to be able to save more.
I met a prospect last week who's renting out a room for $1850 in North Beach near all the strip joints, and that's the most solid option I've seen thus far. So much competition, though. I may end up renting a 2- or 3-BR place myself and then soliciting for people to fill it. I would much prefer the other way around since it's less risky.
I've missed you! I hope you're doing great, yourself. I'm always looking forward to seeing you.
You have both my emails if you wanna chat. You know I love to!
But also glad things are working out for you! Best hopes!
In 30+ years, we've never been able to find something that helped. Medicines are available (dramamine is the obvious one), but it's not practical to take such things 10–12 times a week, I'm sorry to say.
Yes, it's largely being driven by the tech bubble. It has a ways to go before it bursts, so rents are going up, up, up for the foreseeable future.
